Subroto Mukherjee Seminar Conducted

  • The Centre for Air Power Studies conducted the 20th Subroto Mukerjee Seminar at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi. The theme of the seminar was “India & the Global South: Challenges and Opportunities.” Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, graced the event and delivered the inaugural address.
  • During his talk, the CAS emphasised India’s proactive role in raising the concerns of the countries of Global South. He spoke on the relevance of air power & the need for IAF to act as a catalyst for progress, fostering strategic partnerships and contributing to the collective advancement of the Global South.
  • The event also included the launch of two books. “Indian Air Power: Contemporary and Future Dynamics” authored by Air Marshal (Dr) Diptendu Choudhury (Retd) and “Aeroengine Fundamentals and Landscape in India: A Way Forward” authored by Air Vice Marshal Suresh Singh.

Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) – 2023

  • The 8th edition of IONS Conclave of Chiefs was conducted by Royal Thai Navy at Bangkok, Thailand from 19 – 22 Dec 23. Chiefs of Navies/ Senior Delegates from 27 Members/ Observer countries participated in the event. Admiral R Hari Kumar attended the event with a three member Indian Naval delegation.
  • As a first, Flag designed by India was selected as the IONS Flag. India also took over as the co-Chair of IONS Working Groups on Maritime Security and HADR for the forthcoming cycle. Republic of Korea Navy was welcomed by the Conclave as the latest ‘Observer’, raising the collective strength of IONS to 34 (25 Members & 09 Observers).
  • IONS was conceived by the Indian Navy in 2008 as a forum which seeks to enhance maritime cooperation among Navies of the littoral states of the Indian Ocean Region by providing an open and inclusive platform for discussions on regionally relevant maritime issues that would lead to common understanding on the way ahead. The inaugural edition of IONS was held in Feb 2008 at New Delhi, with Indian Navy as the Chair for two years (2008 – 2010). India is also scheduled to take over as the Chair of IONS (2025-27) during 9th CoC planned to be conducted in India in end 2025.

Defence Sector Company BEL Bags Orders Worth Rs 2,673 Cr

  • Bharat Electronics on Friday announced it received orders worth Rs 2,673 crore collectively from Goa Shipyard Limited (Rs 1,701 crore) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (Rs 972 crore).
  • The orders entail supply of 14 types of sensors for use on Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPV).
  • The company had received additional orders worth Rs 86.15 crore pertaining to miscellaneous spares and services, the release added. The state-owned company has bagged cumulative orders of worth Rs 25,935.15 crore till now in the current financial year 2023-24.
  • The shares of Bharat Electronics have risen about 75 per cent on a cumulative basis in 2023.

UN Approves Watered-down Resolution On Aid To Gaza

  • The U.N. Security Council adopted a watered-down resolution Friday calling for immediately speeding aid deliveries to hungry and desperate civilians in Gaza but without the original plea for an “urgent suspension of hostilities” between Israel and Hamas.
  • The long-delayed vote in the 15-member council was 13-0 with the United States and Russia abstaining. The U.S. abstention avoided a third American veto of a Gaza resolution following Hamas’ surprise Oct. 7 attacks inside Israel. Russia wanted the stronger language restored; the U.S. did not.
  • The resolution culminated a week and a half of high-level diplomacy by the United States, the UAE on behalf of Arab nations and others. The vote, initially scheduled for, was pushed back each day until Friday.

Japan Finalises Record $54 Billion Defence Budget For Fiscal 2024

  • Japan on Friday finalised its record 7.7 trillion yen ($54.25 billion) defence budget for fiscal 2024, the second consecutive year in which the country increased defence spending by about a trillion yen from the previous year.
  • The approved budget keeps Japan on track to boost military spending by 43 trillion yen over five years as it seeks to bolster defences in a complex security environment with an increasingly assertive China and unpredictable North Korea.
  • The 2024 budget for the year starting April represents an increase of about 17% from the previous year’s spending of 6.6 trillion yen.
  • It includes over 200 billion yen to strengthen cyber capability as well as funding to start building ballistic missile defence warships with Aegis combat systems, the defence ministry said, estimating the cost per vessel at about 400 billion yen.
