Col Sunita Becomes The First Woman To Command Armed Forces Transfusion Centre

  • An Army Medical Corps Officer Col Sunita BS scripted history on November 21, 2023, by becoming the first woman to assume the role of Commanding Officer at Armed Forces Transfusion Centre, Delhi Cantt.
  • Prior to this, she served in the challenging role of Commanding officer at a strategically important Field Hospital in Arunachal Pradesh, where she provided the best possible Combat Medical Support.
  • Currently, the officer has been given the responsibilities of managing the largest blood transfusion centre of the Armed Forces, AFTC which has state-of-the-art facilities in the field of Transfusion Medicine including Stem Cell cryopreservation, fully automated immune-hematology analyzers, gamma irradiation chambers, and Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) capabilities.  AFTC is the first and the only licensed centre in the country to hold a Frozen Red Cell facility. Her unique blend of academic, administrative, and professional skills is crucial for her current role.

Exercise ‘AustraHind-23’

  • An Indian Armed Forces contingent, comprising 81 personnel, departed for Australia on Wednesday to participate in the second edition of joint military Exercise ‘AustraHind-23’, Ministry of Defence announced in a press release.
  • The exercise will be conducted in Western Australia’s Perth from November 22 to December 6. The Indian Army contingent comprises 60 personnel from a battalion of the Gorkha Rifles. One officer from the Indian Navy and 20 personnel from the Indian Air Force will also participate in the exercise.
  • The Australian Army contingent comprises 60 personnel from the 13th Brigade.
  • The Australian contingent also includes 20 personnel each from the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force, according to an official release by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Japan Lodges Protest After N Korea Launches Spy Satellite

  • After North Korea claimed to have launched its first military spy satellite into space, Japan issued a missile warning for residents in Okinawa and lifted it after sometime.
  • The office of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said a ballistic missile had passed over the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa into the Pacific Ocean.
  • Japan, which had urged Pyongyang not to conduct a launch using ballistic missile technology, said it had not confirmed whether the payload had entered space.
  • North Korea had notified Japan of its plan to launch a satellite during a nine-day window commencing Wednesday, before it fired the projectile prior to the start of the period, the Japanese news agency reported.

Army Chief Manoj Pande calls on Korea’s Joint Chief of Staff General Kim Seung-yum 

  • COAS General Manoj Pande, who is on an official visit to South Korea interacted with the Vice Minister of Defence Acquisition Programme Administration and called on General Kim Seung-yum, Chairman and joint Chief of Staff of the Republic of Korea.
  • “General Manoj Pande COAS was presented an impressive Guard of Honour during his visit. The COAS interacted with General Park An-su, Chief of Staff, ROK Army & exchanged thoughts on contemporary issues of mutual interest,” the Indian Army said.
  • The aim of the visit is to further reinforce the robust defence ties between the two nations. The visit commences on November 20, a momentous day in the history of India-ROK relations, the Ministry of Defence stated.
  • On November 20, 1950, 73 years back, 60 Para Field Ambulances of the Indian Army landed in Busan to provide much-needed medical support during the Korean War.
  • India and ROK celebrate 50 years of diplomatic ties in 2023. This visit underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthen the special strategic partnership.

Indian Navy’s Newest Guided Missile Destroyer Imphal Hits ‘Bulls Eye’

  • Imphal the Indian Navy’s latest indigenous guided missile destroyer scored ‘Bulls Eye’ in her maiden Brahmos firing at sea, the Indian Navy said on Wednesday.
  • This was the first ever test-firing of the extended-range Brahmos missile by a warship before the commissioning, which underscores the unwavering focus of the navy on combat readiness.
  • The Imphal is the third ship of the Visakhapatnam-class stealth guided missile destroyer of the Indian Navy. Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, Mumbai, the INS Imphal ship is a hallmark of indigenous shipbuilding and is amongst the most technologically advanced warships in the world.
  • Imphal was named in recognition of the Indian soldiers who fought in the Battle of Imphal during World War II.
  • Being a guided missile destroyer with a displacement of 7,400 tons and an overall length of 164 meters, Imphal is a potent and versatile platform equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, including surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles and torpedoes.
