India Launches 4th Nuclear-missile Submarine

  • In the midst of a diplomatic spat with Canada, India quietly launched its fourth nuclear powered ballistic missile (SSBN) submarine at Ship Building Center (SBC) in Visakhapatnam this week to strength its nuclear deterrence against its adversaries.
  • While India’s second SSBN INS Arighaat was commissioned by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on August 29, 2024, the third SSBN INS Aridhaman will be commissioned next year.
  • On October 9, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) cleared the Indian Navy’s plans for construction of two nuclear powered attack submarines to deter any adversaries in the Indo-Pacific.
  • S4 defence: It aims to counter China’s long-range missiles such as Dongfeng-21 and Dongfeng-26 and enhance defence in the Indo-Pacific region.

Exercise Naseem Al Bahr 2024

  • INS Trikand and Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft, participated in the Indo-Oman bilateral naval exercise Naseem-Al-Bahr with the Royal Navy of Oman Vessel Al Seeb off Goa from 13 to 18 October 24.
  • The exercise was conducted in two phases: with harbour phase from 13 to 15 October 24, followed by the sea phase. As part of harbour activities, personnel from both Navies engaged in professional interactions, including Subject Matter Expert Exchanges and planning conferences. In addition, sports fixtures and social engagements were also held.
  • During the sea phase of the exercise conducted from 16 to 18 Oct 24, both ships carried out various evolutions, including gun firings at surface inflatable targets, close-range anti-aircraft firings, manoeuvres, and Replenishment at Sea Approaches (RASAPS). The integral helicopter operated from INS Trikand and undertook cross-deck landings and vertical replenishment (VERTREP) with RNOV Al Seeb.
  • Additionally, the Indian Navy’s Dornier aircraft provided Over-the-Horizon Targeting (OTHT) data with the participating ships. To further enhance interoperability, Indian Navy Sea Riders embarked on RNOV Al Seeb for a day. The exercise helped strengthen interoperability and enhanced understanding of each other’s best practices.

PM Modi invites Russian President Putin to visit India next year for Annual Summit

  • PM Narendra Modi held a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan. PM Modi invited Putin to visit India next year for 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.
  • The two leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including political, economic, defence, energy, and people-to-people ties, Prime Minister’s Office said in a press release.
  • This was their second meeting this year as the two leaders had earlier met in Moscow for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit in July 2024.
  • During the meeting, they agreed to remain engaged to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between the two countries, which continues to register significant growth and has shown resilience in the backdrop of geopolitical uncertainties.

PM To Hold Talks With China’s Xi at BRICS Summit

    • Bilateral meeting between PM Modi-Xi Jinping in Kazan will happen today
    • It will be the first formal meeting between the leaders in five years
    • Meeting to happen after agreement over border dispute in eastern Ladakh
    • PM Narendra Modi will hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. This will be the first formal meeting between the two leaders in five years.
    • The development comes a day after the government announced that India and China have reached an agreement to resume patrolling at the remaining friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, where tensions have persisted since the Galwan Valley clash in 2020.
    • The Chinese side also confirmed the development today, saying that a resolution has been reached on “relevant matters” and that it will work with New Delhi to implement these resolutions. The last time a formal meeting happened between PM Modi and Xi Jinping was in Mahabalipuram in October 2019.

14th All India Home Guards & Civil Defence Conference

  • Amit Shah addressed the 14th All India Home Guards and Civil Defence Conference in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. On this occasion, several dignitaries were present, including Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan.
  • Civil Defence Directorate was established in 1962, and the Civil Defence Act was passed in 1968. Shri Shah mentioned the invaluable contribution of Home Guards and Civil Defence volunteers during the wars of 1965 and 1971.

Frigates being built in Russia likely to be commissioned  

  • INS Tushil, the first of two stealth frigates being built in Russia, is likely to be commissioned in December, sources said on Tuesday.
  • India and Russia signed an agreement in 2016 to build four stealth frigates, two of which were to be constructed at a Russian shipyard, while the remaining two frigates were to be built in India by the Goa Shipyard Limited.
