Culmination of Exercise – Varuna 2025
- The bilateral naval exercise VARUNA 2025, held from 19 to 22 Mar 25, brought together Indian Navy and the French Navy, underscoring their enduring partnership.
- The exercise achieved its aim of enhanced Jointmanship and reinforced the shared commitment to upholding the principles of a rules-based maritime order and promoting stability in the Indo-Pacific.
- The complex drills provided invaluable operational experience, strengthening the collective capacity to address contemporary maritime security challenges. The exercise facilitated the critical exchange of Best Practices, fostering a deeper understanding of each other’s operational doctrines and enhancing the two navies’ ability to operate seamlessly in complex maritime environments.
IMA to Induct 1st Batch of Women Officer Cadets
- The 92-year-old Dehradun-based IMA will induct its first batch of women officer cadets in July 2025 after they graduate from the NDA in Khadakwasla that opened its doors to them for the first time three years ago following a Supreme Court ruling, officials aware of the matter said on Monday.
- Eight of the 18 women cadets, who are currently in the sixth and final term of training at NDA, have opted to serve in the army and will join IMA for another year of training before they are commissioned as officers next year, the officials said, asking not to be named.
- The first batch of women cadets will pass from NDA in May after completing three years of training. They had joined the tri-services academy in August 2022.
- NDA currently accounts for 126 women cadets who are in different stages of training.
Assam Rifles Celebrates 190 Years of Service
- Assam Rifles, one of the oldest and most prestigious paramilitary forces in India, celebrated its 190th Raising Day on Wednesday with great pride and solemnity at its headquarters in Shillong.
- The milestone marks nearly two centuries of dedicated service, valor and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s borders.
- The Assam Rifles were formed in 1835. It has grown substantially over the years from 17 battalions in 1960 to over 45 battalions at present. The force guards the 1,643-km border with Myanmar along Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km), and Mizoram (510 km).
- The Assam Rifles (AR) is a paramilitary force of India responsible for border security, counter-insurgency, and maintaining law and order in Northeast India and in Jammu & Kashmir in lines of Rashtriya Rifles. Its primary duty involves guarding the Indo-Myanmar border.
- The AR is one of the Oldest Central Para-military Forces of India administered by the Ministry of Home Affairs while operational control rests with Indian Army.
5th Battalion of Rajput Regiment Turns 200
- The 5th Battalion of the Rajput Regiment that has participated in active operations, both before and after Independence, and honoured with four consecutive citations in recent times for its exemplary dedication to the nation has turned 200.
- Raised in 1825 in Kanpur (then Cawnpore), the 5th Battalion is among the few units of the Indian Army to achieve two centuries of continuous service.
- A commemorative postal stamp was unveiled by former Army Chief General (Retd.) V K Singh, currently the Governor of Mizoram, at a ceremony held at Delhi Cantonment on March 22 to mark the bicentenary of the battalion, a senior official said on Monday.
Bangladesh Army Chief Warns of Terror Attacks
- Bangladesh Army chief General Waqar-Uz-Zaman has cautioned against terrorist attacks in the country within the next month and called for increased vigilance against potential attacks.
- General Waqar, speaking to senior Army commanders in Dhaka over the weekend, hinted that he has received intelligence that a terror strike could be orchestrated over the next week and urged caution, it has been learnt. He also mentioned that during a meeting with US senators, concerns were expressed over rising extremism in Bangladesh.
- The Army chief’s comments are significant in the backdrop of growing acts of vandalism and attacks on minorities by Islamists since the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina government in August last year.
- Meanwhile, a consignment of 11,500 tonnes of parboiled rice arrived at Chattogram port under package-2 from India. The Bangladesh government has inked a contract with India to import 450,000 tonnes of parboiled rice under nine packages. Of the total, at least 285,769 tonnes of parboiled rice have already landed in the country with the rest slated to be delivered in phases.
