Air Force use would’ve slowed Chinese offensive in 1962 war: CDS

  • Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan has said the use of Air Force would have slowed the Chinese offensive considerably during the 1962 Sino-Indian war, and it may have been termed as “escalatory” then, but that is not the case now as seen in Operation Sindoor.
  • Speaking about the war with China 63 years ago, he noted the forward policy should not have been applied uniformly to Ladakh and NEFA (North-East Frontier Agency) or present-day Arunachal Pradesh, arguing the two regions had different histories of dispute and entirely different terrain, and following identical policies was flawed.
  • General Chauhan made the remarks in a recorded video message played on Wednesday during the release of the revised autobiography of the late Lieutenant General S P P Thorat – ‘Reveille to Retreat’ – in Pune.
  • Lt Gen Thorat was the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command, in the lead-up to the Sino-Indian war.

Statehood Protest Takes Violent Turn In Ladakh

  • Four persons were killed and at least 50 injured in Leh Wednesday as police opened fire after protesters, demanding statehood and seeking extension of Sixth Schedule protections to Ladakh, turned violent. The BJP office in Leh was also torched.
  • Following the violence, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was on a hunger strike for the past 35 days in support of Ladakh’s demands, called off his fast. The Leh administration has restricted the assembly of four or more people as a precautionary measure. The violence came ahead of talks scheduled between the Centre and the Leh Apex Body on October 6, after a gap of four months. Sources at the Centre said the government wanted Wangchuk to be kept out of the negotiations, seeing him as a hurdle in the negotiations.
  • Wangchuk, who said the people were frustrated as “next elections are about to happen and they (the Centre) are yet to fulfil promises made in the last elections”, claimed they were now expecting a high-level delegation from the Home Ministry to meet them in Ladakh on Thursday.
  • The Gen Z remark seemed to be a reference to the violent protests in Nepal recently led by youths, which led to the overthrow of the government.

Deal 66,500 Crore for 97 Tejas Mark-1A Fighters

  • The largest-ever contract worth Rs 66,500 crore for 97 Tejas Mark-1A fighters is now all set to be inked with HAL though the IAF is yet to get even the first such `improved’ jet of the 83 ordered earlier for Rs 46,898 crore in Feb 2021.
  • The mega 97-jet contract for the fourth-generation Tejas could be inked as early as Thursday, a day ahead of the retirement of 36 old MiG-21s that will drag down the IAF to its all-time low of 29 fighter squadrons (each has 16-18 jets).Pakistan, in contrast, is cruising close behind with 25 fighter squadrons, and will get at least 40 J-35A fifth-generation Chinese stealth jets in the near future. China, of course, is leagues ahead, with more than four times the number of fighters, bombers and force-multipliers as compared to India.
  • After Operation Sindoor, which saw Pakistan use Chinese-origin jets like J-10s armed with PL-15 beyond visual range air-to-air missiles with ranges over 200-km, an IAF internal assessment has held it will need far more than even its “authorized” 42.5 fighter squadrons to tackle the collusive and fused threat from its adversaries.
  • GE has delivered three engines till now, with another seven slated by Dec. Thereafter, GE is expected to deliver 20 engines every year. For the 97-jet deal, HAL will ink another deal with GE for 113 more such engines for $1 billion.
