Crimea Will Remain With Russia, Donald Trump
- US President Donald Trump has said that Crimea “will stay with Russia”.
- In an interview with Time Magazine to mark 100 days in office, the US President said that Crimea would not have been annexed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2014 had he (Trump) been in the White House at the time.
- “It was handed to them by Barack Hussein Obama (the then US President), and not by me…” he said adding, “Crimea, if I were president, it would not have been taken. “Crimea is a peninsula in Eastern Europe, on the northern coast of the Black Sea, almost entirely surrounded by the Black Sea and the smaller Sea of Azov. The Isthmus of Perekop connects the peninsula to Kherson Oblast in mainland Ukraine.
- Crimea’s significance is rooted in its history and strategic geography. The Black Sea peninsula has long been a coveted asset for both Russia and Ukraine. First annexed by the Russian Empire in the 18th century, it saw significant demographic and political shifts over centuries.
- In 1954, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev transferred Crimea from Russia to Ukraine — both part of the USSR at the time — to mark the 300th anniversary of the unification of Moscow and Kyiv. Upon the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991, Crimea became part of newly independent Ukraine.
- From the perspective of Ukraine, Crimea holds immense strategic and security value. It enables control over maritime activity in the Black Sea and had become an integral part of Ukraine’s national identity over six decades.
India, Saudi Arabia hold Inaugural Army-to-Army Staff Talks
- The Inaugural Army-to-Army Staff Talks between the Indian Army and the Royal Saudi Land Forces (RSLF) took place in New Delhi from April 23-24, with the discussions centered around strengthening defence ties through the Annual Defence Cooperation Plan, which included plans for Joint Exercise Sada Tanseeq, military training and education, domain expert exchanges, and collaborative efforts in operational logistics.
- The post added, “Both sides also explored avenues of collaboration in operational logistics, battlefield management systems and niche technologies to enhance interoperability and capability development.”
- Earlier, following the State Visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Saudi Arabia, both sides appreciated the deepening of the defence ties as a key pillar of the Strategic Partnership, and welcomed the creation of a Ministerial Committee on Defence Cooperation under the Strategic Partnership Council.
- “They noted with satisfaction the growth of their joint defence cooperation, including numerous ‘firsts’ like the first ever Land Forces exercise SADA TANSEEQ, two rounds of the Naval Exercises AL MOHED AL HINDI, many high-level visits, and training exchanges
Border Bristles: Pakistan violates ceasefire, India responds
- The situation along the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan heated up on Friday, with ceasefire violations and multiple incidents of ‘speculative firing’ on the other side, a move that’s typically carried out in fear of an incoming assault.
- On the night of April 25-26, unprovoked small firing was carried out by multiple Pakistan Army posts all across the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir,” the Srinagar-based defence official said.
- He said army troops responded to the ceasefire violations appropriately with small arms.
- “No casualties have been reported,” he added.
- Speculative firing took place on 25th April as well, with military sources indicating that Pakistani troops may be testing the readiness of Indian soldiers amidst growing calls in India for decisive action against terrorist hotspots along the LoC.
- These ceasefire violations are a response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack, where five terrorists shot and killed at least 26 civilians who were vacationing in Baisaran meadow, often referred to as “Mini Switzerland.”
