Exercise Jal Prahar

  • The Indian Navy successfully concluded the biannual joint Exercise Jal Prahar, a joint amphibious exercise conducted in close coordination with the Indian Army.
  • The exercise aimed to validate and enhance inter-service synergy, operational planning and execution in amphibious operations along India’s eastern seaboard.
  • The exercise was conducted in two phases. The Harbour Phase (16-20 Sep) at Visakhapatnam focused on the induction and integration of army troops onboard INS Gharial.
  • The Sea Phase (21-23 Sep) witnessed the execution of amphibious operations, which included hard beaching at Kakinada, launching of LCAs and BMPs, and validation of SOPs and Joint Training Protocols.

India-US to Conclude USD 1 bn Deal by October

  • India is on track to finalise a significant deal with the US aerospace firm General Electric (GE) worth around USD 1 billion for 113 F404-IN20 fighter jet engines, amid ongoing trade negotiations with America.
  • Regarding the contract for the 113 follow-on GE-404 engines, the HAL chief told ANI, “We expect to sign it in October. The contract will be worth more than 1 billion. The contract negotiations are done, and the price is finalised. We are only going through the contract details, and we have to sign. Now that this main contract is signed, in October, we will sign the contract with GE for 113 engines…”
  • HAL has concluded negotiations for 113 engines with General Electric, awaiting contract signing. The order includes 68 single-seat fighters and 29 twin-seat trainers, with deliveries starting in 2027-28 and completing over six years.

India’s Indigenous Wheeled-APC “WhAP”

  • India’s indigenously designed and developed Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) 8×8, made in collaboration with the DRDO and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), is set to take “Indian defence innovation” to the global stage.
  • On September 23, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Moroccan counterpart, Minister Abdelatif Loudyi, inaugurated TASL’s new state-of-the-art defence manufacturing facility in Berrechid. The facility, spread over 20,000 square metres, will produce WhAP 8×8 vehicles for the Royal Moroccan Army. Initial deliveries are scheduled to begin next month.
  • The Army uses the Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicle (IPMV), which, as per DRDO, has a 600 hp engine, fully automatic transmission, 7.62 mm RCWS, ballistic protection with composite add-on armour, and blast protection for the crew.

MiG-21 Decommissioning Ceremony

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said he will be in Chandigarh on Friday to attend the Indian Air Force’s MiG-21 decommissioning ceremony.
  • After serving for six decades, the iconic MiG-21 is going to retire today.The aircraft leaves behind a record of unmatched service and a legacy that will be remembered as India transitions to a new generation of fighter jets.
  • Inducted in 1963, the MiG-21 has served for nearly six decades and has been a cornerstone of India’s air power. The first squadron, the 28 Squadron, raised in Chandigarh, was nicknamed ‘First Supersonics’ as India’s first supersonic fighter.
  • In the 1971 war, MiG-21s struck the Governor’s residence in Dhaka, leading to Pakistan’s surrender. The aircraft has shot down multiple generations of enemy fighters, from F-104s in 1971 to the F-16 in 2019, making it one of the most battle-tested jets in IAF history.

US Approves $1.2 Billion Missile Sale to Germany

  • The United States on Thursday announced the approval of a $1.23 billion sale of up to 400 advanced air-to-air missiles and related equipment to NATO ally Germany.
  • “The proposed sale will improve Germany’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing increased air-to-air capability for the German F-35 program and supporting German and shared NATO planning, training, and operational requirements,” the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said in a statement.
  • It will also “support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a NATO ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,” DSCA said.
  • The US announcement came after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz vowed to take “all necessary measures to ensure effective deterrence against… violations of airspace and other attacks by the Russian military.”

IAF, IIT Ropar join hands to drive defence Innovation

  • Maintenance Command of the IAF and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar in Punjab have signed a MOU for collaborative developmental projects aimed at supporting the sustenance and operational requirements of the IAF.
  • Under the MoU, IAF has identified key focus areas related to technology development and indigenous solutions for the sustenance of weapon systems. IIT Ropar will extend consultancy support, backed by advanced research, feasibility studies and development of technology demonstrators. The collaboration between IIT Ropar and the Maintenance Command of the IAF is expected to provide a significant impetus to IAF’s quest for self-reliance, the statement said.
  • It will also help in addressing challenges in niche defence technology areas while fostering an ecosystem of innovation through academia-military synergy, it said.
