Russia’s Deadly Attack On Ukraine

  • Russia battered much of Ukraine on Monday, firing scores of missiles and drones that killed four people, injured more than a dozen and damaged energy facilities in attacks that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as “vile.”
  • The barrage of over 100 missiles and a similar number of drones began around midnight and continued through daybreak in what appeared to be Russia’s biggest onslaught in weeks.
  • U.S. President Joe Biden called the Russian attack on energy infrastructure “outrageous” and said he had “re-prioritized U.S. air defense exports so they are sent to Ukraine first.” He also said the U.S. was “surging energy equipment to Ukraine to repair its systems and strengthen the resilience of Ukraine’s energy grid.”
  • Ukraine’s national energy company, Ukrenergo, has been forced to implement emergency power cuts to stabilize the system, Shmyhal said. Power outages have been recorded in several cities, including Kyiv and Dnipro, according to Serhii Kovalenko, chief executive of the Yasno energy company.

Philippines Says China ‘Biggest Disruptor’ Of Peace In Southeast Asia

  • Manila: China is the “biggest disruptor” of peace in Southeast Asia, the Philippine defence chief said Tuesday, as tensions between Manila and Beijing over disputed reefs and waters in the South China Sea escalate.
  • “China… is the biggest disruptor of international peace in the ASEAN region,” Gilberto Teodoro told a conference of the US Indo-Pacific Command in Manila, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
  • Teodoro’s remarks follow a series of confrontations between Philippine and Chinese vessels in the South China Sea.
  • China claims almost the entirety of the sea, despite an international ruling that its claims have no legal basis.
  • Beijing’s claims include reefs and waters inside the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone, which extends about 370 kilometres (200 nautical miles) from the country’s coastal waters.
