Defence Current Affairs 27 December 2025
India’s defence sector continues to witness rapid progress with fresh indigenous orders, strategic partnerships, advanced counter-drone deployments, and crucial policy decisions on the horizon. Alongside domestic developments, global security dynamics are also evolving, as seen in recent cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.
AMSL Secures ₹100+ Crore Defence Contract
Apollo Micro Systems Limited (AMSL) has strengthened its position in India’s defence manufacturing landscape by winning new orders valued at over ₹100 crore. According to regulatory disclosures, the company has received contracts worth approximately ₹1,002 crore from a private entity for the supply of unmanned aerial systems to the Ministry of Defence.
The execution timeline for these orders is set at four months, highlighting the urgency and operational relevance of the systems involved. AMSL operates across multiple high-technology sectors, including aerospace, defence, transportation, and infrastructure, and this contract further underscores the growing reliance on domestic firms for advanced defence solutions.
Defence Acquisition Council Likely to Clear Major Indigenous Projects
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), the Ministry of Defence’s top procurement decision-making body, is expected to take up several critical indigenous defence proposals. Among the most significant is a domestically developed integrated air defence weapon system aimed at protecting the Delhi-NCR region from aerial threats.
To enhance drone warfare capabilities, the Indian Army may receive approval for the procurement of around 850 loitering munitions. Meanwhile, the Indian Navy is likely to push for the acquisition of medium-range surface-to-air missile systems from Indian manufacturers to strengthen warship defence.
The council is also expected to consider leasing two Sea Guardian MQ-9B high-altitude long-endurance drones from the United States for a period of three years. India has already finalized a deal for 31 such drones, with deliveries anticipated from 2028 onwards.
In addition, the DAC may approve the development and large-scale induction of Astra Mark-2 air-to-air missiles for the Indian Air Force, featuring a strike range exceeding 200 km, along with a defined quantity of Meteor missiles. The Indian Army’s proposal to indigenously refurbish 200 T-90 tanks through a defence PSU is also on the agenda.
BEL and Astra Microwave Join Hands for Defence Electronics
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a Navratna defence PSU, has entered into a strategic partnership with Astra Microwave Products Limited through a Memorandum of Understanding signed on 24 December 2025. The collaboration focuses on the joint design, development, and manufacturing of advanced electronic systems for defence and aerospace applications.
Key areas of cooperation include electronic warfare systems, radar technologies, and satellite-based solutions. BEL brings decades of experience in defence electronics, covering radars, communication networks, weapon systems, and EW solutions. This partnership represents another important step toward strengthening India’s indigenous defence electronics ecosystem.
Vajra Sentinel Anti-Drone System Deployed at Kartavya Path
India’s capital security has received a significant upgrade with the deployment of the Vajra Sentinel Anti-Drone System at Kartavya Path in New Delhi. The system has been developed by Chennai-based defence start-up Big Bang Boom Solutions Private Limited (BBBS), which specializes in counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS).
BBBS had earlier secured defence contracts worth over ₹200 crore from the Indian Air Force and Indian Army in 2024. The Vajra Sentinel is designed to detect, track, and neutralize hostile drones, including widely available commercial models such as DJI Mavic and Phantom.
The system can be enhanced with optional upgrades like AESA radar and kamikaze drone integration, allowing it to adapt to evolving aerial threats. Its clearance from DGAQA and successful field trials have established BBBS as an emerging leader in India’s counter-drone capabilities.
Nigeria Cooperates With US to Prevent Unilateral Military Action
On the international front, Nigeria’s decision to openly cooperate with the United States during a Christmas Day airstrike may have prevented unilateral US military intervention. The strike targeted Islamic State militants operating in northwest Nigeria and was carried out at the request of the Nigerian government.
Former US President Donald Trump stated that the militants had been attacking Christian communities in the region and confirmed that the operation was delayed by a day on his instructions. US officials later indicated that the strike was partly symbolic but also intended as a deterrent, signaling Washington’s willingness to use military force if necessary.
According to US defence sources, the remote location of the target made it inaccessible to Nigerian forces, prompting US involvement. While security analysts remain uncertain about the long-term effectiveness of such strikes, they acknowledge their psychological and strategic messaging value.
