DRDO & INAE Organise 11th Engineers Conclave

  • The 11th Engineers Conclave, jointly organised by DRDO and Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) in Hyderabad, commenced on September 26, 2024.
  • The aim of the two-day annual conclave is to deliberate on two strategic priorities i.e., ‘Additive Manufacturing for Defence Applications’ and ‘Defence Manufacturing Technologies’.
  • “The Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), founded in 1987 comprises India’s engineers, engineer-scientists and technologists covering the entire spectrum of engineering disciplines. The Academy is registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860 and is an autonomous institution supported partly through grant-in-aid by Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. As the only engineering Academy of the country, INAE represents India at the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS) . INAE functions as an apex body and promotes the practice of engineering & technology and the related sciences for their application to solving problems of national importance.”

Delivery of LSAM 13 (YARD 81)

  • The delivery of ‘Missile Cum Ammunition Barge, LSAM 13 (Yard 81)’, the fifth Barge of 08 x Missile Cum Ammunition Barge project, built by MSME Shipyard, M/s SECON Engineering Projects Pvt Ltd, Visakhapatnam for Indian Navy, was undertaken on 25 Sep 24 at Naval Dockyards, Mumbai for INS Tunir.
  • The contract for building 08 x Missile Cum Ammunition Barge was signed between MoD and M/s SECON Engineering Projects Pvt Ltd, Visakhapatnam on 19 Feb 21.
  • The model testing of the Barge during design stage was undertaken at Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, Visakhapatnam. These Barges are proud flag bearers of Make in India initiative of Government of India.

ADM Dinesh K Tripathi, On An Official Visit To Greece

  • Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), is on a four day official visit to Greece from 26 to 29 Sep 24. This visit is part of ongoing efforts to further consolidate bilateral defence relations between India and Greece, with a focus on enhancing Naval Cooperation.
  • During the visit, the CNS will engage in bilateral discussions with senior Greek defence officials, including Mr. Ioannis Kefalogiannis, Deputy Minister of Defence, Vice Admiral Dimitrios E Kataras, Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff, Vice Admiral Christos Sasiakos, Deputy Chief of Hellenic National Defence General Staff.
  • As part of his visit, Adm Dinesh K Tripathi shall be visiting the Salamis Bay, the base of the Hellenic Naval Fleet as well as the Hellenic Naval Academy.
  • The Hellenic Navy Chief shall be hosting the Indian CNS onboard the renowned Georgios AVEROF, the Hellenic naval museum ship, offering him a glimpse into Greece’s rich maritime history and naval heritage.

“Let’s Make UN More Effective”: French President

  • French President Emmanuel Macron voiced France’s support for India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the UNSC. The remarks by Macron came during his address at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
  • Notably, India has long sought a permanent seat in the Security Council to better represent the interests of the developing world. The nation’s quest has gained momentum with support from the international community.The five permanent members of the UNSC include China, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and the United States. The non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council are elected for 2-year terms by the UNGA.
  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira, and South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, held a meeting on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the UNGA in New York on Thursday.
  • During the meeting, the IBSA ministers reiterated their commitment to work for the expansion of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) membership to include representation from developing countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America, in both the permanent and non-permanent membership categories.

AFSPA Extended In Parts of Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh

  • The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, which allows areas to be labelled as “disturbed” for the ease of security operations, has been extended in eight districts of Nagaland, three districts of Arunachal Pradesh, and several other regions for an additional six months, following a review of the law and order conditions in both northeastern states.
  • In a notification, the Union Home Ministry said the central government, in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (28 of 1958), had declared eight districts and 21 police stations in five other districts of Nagaland as ‘disturbed areas’ for a period of six months with effect from April 1, 2024.
  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier said the AFSPA has been removed in 70 per cent areas in the northeastern states, even though it is in force in Jammu and Kashmir.
