India’s Request for Additional S-400 Squadrons

India is preparing to place a formal request for five more squadrons of the Russian S-400 Triumf air defence system during the upcoming Modi–Putin summit on December 5, 2025. The move comes after the successful deployment of the earlier three squadrons, which proved highly effective during Operation Sindoor, where they neutralised advanced Pakistani fighter aircraft at long ranges.

To replenish missiles used in operations and enhance long-term stockpile levels, India plans a procurement worth around ₹10,000 crore. Russia has also committed to setting up a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) centre in India, ensuring quicker servicing and higher operational readiness.

Parallel to this, India is exploring deeper cooperation in the aviation sector. Negotiations continue for the local production of 120–140 Su-57 stealth fighters at HAL Nashik, seen as a bridging capability until the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) enters service around 2035.

Exercise Garuda 2025: Strengthening India–France Air Cooperation

The 8th edition of Exercise Garuda is underway from 16–27 November 2025 at the Mont-de-Marsan Air Base in France. More than 500 personnel and 25 aircraft from the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the French Air and Space Force (FASF) are participating.

The exercise emphasises:

  • Advanced air combat training
  • Use of strategic airlift platforms such as C-17 Globemaster III
  • Aerial refuelling operations using IL-78 tankers

India and France have maintained a strong defence relationship since their Strategic Partnership of 1998, which has expanded into nuclear cooperation, space technology, and Indo-Pacific security.

A New Phase in India–France Defence Industrial Collaboration

On 20 November 2025, India and France signed a landmark framework agreement at the DRDO Headquarters, New Delhi. Representatives from the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) and India’s DRDO formalised the arrangement, which builds upon the India–France Defence Industrial Partnership Roadmap announced in January 2024.

This structured framework is expected to:

  • Simplify decision-making between the two agencies
  • Accelerate defence R&D
  • Enable faster execution of joint technological projects

It marks a major push towards collaborative innovation and co-development in future defence systems.

Inauguration of the Ananth Centre of Excellence for Navigation

ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan inaugurated India’s first private-sector navigation innovation hub—Ananth Centre of Excellence for Navigation (ACEN)—in Thiruvananthapuram. Established by Ananth Technologies, the centre aims to boost India’s self-reliance in critical navigation systems used across defence, aviation, space missions, and civilian infrastructure.

Navigation technologies play a vital role in:

  • Precision-guided missiles
  • Aircraft and drone operations
  • Maritime movement
  • Satellite-based systems

ACEN will also address a longstanding challenge: the heavy dependence on foreign proprietary systems for maintenance and repair of navigation equipment used in defence platforms.
