79th Infantry Day – Shaurya Diwas 2025

The Indian Army observed the 79th Infantry Day, also known as Shaurya Diwas, on 27 October 2025 with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial, New Delhi. The day pays tribute to the bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of Indian Infantry soldiers.

Infantry Day is celebrated annually to mark the historic moment in 1947, when Indian Army infantrymen became the first troops to land at Srinagar Airport. Their prompt action and courageous operations successfully repelled a Pakistan-backed tribal invasion, securing Jammu and Kashmir’s territorial integrity. The occasion stands as a proud reminder of the Infantry’s valour and steadfast commitment to the nation’s defence.

INS Ikshak to be Commissioned on November 6

The Indian Navy’s indigenously built survey vessel ‘Ikshak’ is set to be commissioned at the Naval Base on 6 November 2025. The ceremony will be presided over by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff. Ikshak is the third ship in the Survey Vessel (Large) class, highlighting India’s progress in hydrographic capability and indigenous shipbuilding.

Constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd., Kolkata, under the supervision of the Directorate of Ship Production and the Warship Overseeing Team (Kolkata), the vessel boasts more than 80% indigenous content. Notably, it is the first survey vessel designed with dedicated accommodation for women personnel, reflecting the Navy’s inclusive approach.

The name Ikshak, meaning “the guide,” symbolizes its mission to map uncharted waters, ensure safe navigation for mariners, and enhance India’s maritime presence and safety at sea.

Turkey Signs Major Eurofighter Typhoon Deal

In a major defence development, Turkey has finalized an £8 billion ($10.7 billion) agreement with Britain to purchase 20 new Eurofighter Typhoon jets. The deal, signed during British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s first visit to Turkey since assuming office, marks a strengthening of strategic ties between the two NATO allies.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan described the agreement as a milestone that could pave the way for future joint defence projects. The new fighter jets will bolster Turkey’s air defence capabilities and help the country keep pace with regional powers like Israel.

Additionally, Turkey’s defence ministry revealed plans to acquire 12 more Typhoons each from Oman and Qatar, further expanding its modern fighter fleet.

Russia Terminates Plutonium Disposal Agreement with the United States

Russian President Vladimir Putin has formally terminated a long-defunct Plutonium Management and Disposition Agreement (PMDA) with the United States, originally signed in 2000 and updated in 2010. The agreement aimed to reduce Cold War-era plutonium stockpiles by 34 metric tonnes each, converting the material for use in civilian nuclear power generation.

The decision comes amid strained relations between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, following disagreements over the Ukraine conflict and the cancellation of a planned peace summit. The termination reflects deepening tensions and growing nuclear unease, as Western leaders have accused Russia of nuclear brinkmanship since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The move underscores a deteriorating global arms control environment, as both nations step back from earlier commitments to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
