First Two Overhauled T-72 Tanks Rolled Out
India has taken another step towards strengthening its armoured fleet with the successful overhaul of two T-72 battle tanks under a pilot programme. The tanks were refurbished by Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ), which operates under Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL). Lieutenant General Amardeep Singh Aujla, the Master General Sustainment (MGS) of the Indian Army, formally flagged off the overhauled platforms.
To address the growing demand for battle tank refurbishment, AVNL assigned VFJ the task of enhancing overhaul capacity alongside the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF), another AVNL unit. According to an official release, VFJ completed the project in strict compliance with the Indian Army’s technical specifications and quality benchmarks. The achievement underlines VFJ’s preparedness to support the Army’s operational and maintenance requirements on a larger scale.
India–Russia Engage in Technical Talks on Su-57 Fighter
India and Russia are currently engaged in detailed technical consultations to assess the feasibility of jointly producing the fifth-generation Sukhoi Su-57E fighter aircraft in India, according to senior Russian aerospace officials. The discussions include the possibility of manufacturing the aircraft at facilities already producing the Su-30 fighters, with extensive participation from Indian industries and integration of indigenous systems.
During ongoing engagements, Russia also showcased its advanced aviation platforms, including the Ilyushin Il-114-300 regional transport aircraft and the Sukhoi SJ-100. Russian officials indicated that the Su-57 proposal is at an advanced stage of evaluation and would require comprehensive technical and contractual assessment.
In parallel, cooperation in the civil aviation sector is also progressing. An agreement has reportedly been signed between United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for producing Superjet-100 regional aircraft in India. The partnership aims not only to localise manufacturing but also to supply components and systems back to Russia.
India and Russia to Conduct Joint Naval Exercises
India and Russia are set to enhance maritime cooperation through joint naval exercises scheduled to take place in the Bay of Bengal in February. According to Russian media reports, a frigate from Russia’s Pacific Fleet will participate in the multinational Milan-2026 naval drills before making an unofficial port visit to Visakhapatnam between February 18 and 25. The exercises reflect continued defence engagement between the two nations in the Indo-Pacific region.
Trump Signals Military Pressure on Iran
Former US President Donald Trump has once again adopted a tough tone on Iran, highlighting both military readiness and the possibility of negotiations. Speaking at a public event in Iowa, Trump referred to a significant US naval presence moving towards the region, describing it as a show of strength aimed at compelling Tehran to negotiate.
He reiterated this stance in media interviews, stating that the situation with Iran remains fluid and claiming that Iranian officials have expressed interest in talks. The military build-up reportedly includes aircraft carrier strike groups, destroyers, and air assets, intended to counter Iran’s regional influence and recent missile tests. The remarks come amid rising tensions linked to Iran’s proxy activities across West Asia.
Rajnath Singh Calls for Faster Induction of Indigenous Weapons
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has urged faster deployment of indigenous defence technologies, praising the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for its role in strengthening India’s military capabilities. Referring to lessons from recent operations, he stressed the need to minimise delays between research, prototype development, testing, and induction into the armed forces.
Highlighting the fast-changing nature of modern warfare, Singh noted that technological superiority depends on speed as much as capability. He called for closer collaboration between DRDO, the public sector, and private industry, while advising the organisation to avoid duplicating capacities already present in the private sector. According to him, timely induction of systems should be the primary benchmark for evaluating defence research performance.
