MoD To Undertake Plantation of 15 Lakh Trees
- The Ministry of Defence will undertake a massive 15 lakh trees plantation drive across the country on the occasion of 78th Independence Day ceremony on 15th August 2024.
- The plantation drive is a part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam‘ (A Tree in the Name of Mother) campaign, and will be conducted through the three Services, and associated organizations such as DRDO, Defence PSUs, CGDA, NCC, Sainik Schools, Ordnance factories.
- It may be recalled that PM Narendra Modi launched the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign on the occasion of World Environment Day on 5 June 2024 and urged everyone in India and across the globe to plant a tree as a tribute to the mothers.
Quad Foreign Ministers Meet
- Foreign ministers from Australia, India, Japan and the United States – a grouping known as the ‘Quad’ – met in Tokyo on Monday for talks expected to focus on maritime security and initiatives to build up cyber defences.
- The talks attended by Australia’s Penny Wong, India’s Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Japan’s Yoko Kamikawa and Antony Blinken from the U.S., follow security discussions between Tokyo and Washington on Sunday where the allies labelled China the “greatest strategic challenge” facing the region.
- The U.S announced plans on Sunday for a major revamp of its military command in Japan to deepen coordination with its ally’s forces.
- External Affairs minister S Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday in Tokyo and discussed a wide range of regional and global issues and bilateral ties. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting.
- Notably, the QUAD—Quadrilateral Security Dialogue—is a strategic security dialogue between Australia, India, Japan, and the United States maintained by talks between member countries. In November 2017, the countries gave shape to the long-pending proposal of setting up the Quad to develop a new strategy to keep the critical sea routes in the Indo-Pacific free of any influence.
Israel Vows Retaliation After Rocket Kills 12 Youths In Golan
- Israel vowed on Sunday to “hit the enemy hard” after rocket fire from Lebanon killed 12 young people in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights and fanned fears that the war in Gaza will spread.
- Iran warned Israel that any new military “adventures” in Lebanon could lead to “unforeseen consequences”.
- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned Saturday’s rocket fire and called on all parties to “exercise maximum restraint”.
- Israel blamed Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement for firing a Falaq-1 Iranian rocket but the Iran-backed group — which has regularly targeted Israeli military positions — said it had “no connection” to the incident.
- The rocket fire in Majdal Shams, whose population are Arabic-speaking Druze, prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to return early from the United States.
- “Hezbollah will pay a heavy price” for the attack, “a price it has not paid before”, he said.
Phase 3 of India, China Border Roads Project
- BRO along with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and the National Projects Construction Corporation, has initiated the third phase of the strategic India, China Border Roads (ICBR) project, which would boost the road network in eastern Ladakh.
- India–China Border Roads is a Government of India project for developing infrastructure along the Sino-Indian border by constructing strategic roads, including bridges and tunnels. The ICBR project is largely in response to Chinese infrastructure development along the borderlands with India.

Centre Relocates 2,000 BSF Personnel From Odisha To Enhance Security In J-K
- In a swift response to recent terror attacks, the government has ordered the relocation of over 2,000 BSF personnel from Odisha to the volatile Jammu and Kashmir region along the India-Pakistan border, sources said on Saturday.
- This strategic move aims to bolster security and counter the escalating threats in the Union Territory.
- The two battalions extracted from Odisha were previously engaged in anti-Naxal operations, and now they will fortify the defenses in the terror-stricken Jammu region.
- The Centre’s move comes days after Director General of the BSF Nitin Agrawal on July 21 reviewed the operational readiness of the troops deployed at the Jammu International Border.
