Indian Peacekeeper Is UN Military Gender Advocate of The Year
- An Indian peacekeeper deployed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), who helped establish networks for local people to voice their security and humanitarian concerns, is the winner of the 2023 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award, the UN announced.
- Major Radhika Sen served in eastern DRC with the UN peacekeeping mission, MONUSCO, from March 2023 to April 2024 as the Commander of the Engagement Platoon for the Indian Rapid Deployment Battalion.
- Major Sen facilitated English classes for children, and health, gender and vocational training for displaced and marginalized adults. Her efforts directly inspired women’s solidarity, providing safe spaces for open dialogue.
- Major Sen is the second Indian peacekeeper to receive the award, following Major Suman Gawani, a co-recipient for 2019. Other past honourees were from Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, Niger, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
National Strategic Policy doesn’t have to be written down: CDS
- General Anil Chauhan said that the absence of a written national strategic policy does not imply that the country lacks a strategic policy. Speaking at the release of book “Crafting a New Indian Art of War,” Gen Chauhan contested the insistence on having a national security strategy in written format.
- “When we talk about national security strategy, I believe it consists of policy, processes, and practices to succeed. In our country, probably all three are addressed. The only thing missing is a written policy. I don’t know why people insist on that,” Gen Chauhan said.
- If we didn’t have a policy, we wouldn’t have succeeded as we did in revoking Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, he asserted. Citing the example of Israel, he said, “They (Israel) don’t have a written policy, but they have a policy and follow that policy.”
Rafah Airstrike, And Fire Was Caused By Secondary Blast
- The Israeli military says an initial investigation into a strike that sparked a deadly weekend fire in a tent camp in the southern Gaza city of Rafah has found the blaze was caused by a secondary explosion.
- Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the chief military spokesman, said Tuesday that the military fired two 17-kilogram (37-pound) munitions that targeted two senior Hamas militants. He said the munitions would have been too small to ignite a fire on their own and the military is looking into the possibility that weapons were stored in the area.
- New strikes in the same western Tel al-Sultan district of Rafah that was hit Sunday killed at least 16 Palestinians, the Palestinian Civil Defense and the Palestinian Red Crescent said Tuesday. Residents reported an escalation of fighting in the southern Gaza city once seen as the territory’s last refuge.
