MoD India Reviews Russian ‘Product 177S’
A high-level delegation from the Indian Ministry of Defence recently visited the UEC–Salyut engine manufacturing complex in Moscow, marking a major milestone in Indo–Russian aerospace cooperation.
During the visit, United Engine Corporation (UEC) presented an overview of its latest and upcoming engine technologies, highlighting advancements in performance, maintenance support, and opportunities for local production with Indian industries.
The key feature of the presentation was the introduction of the next-generation “Product 177S” engine — a modular turbofan designed to provide higher thrust, improved fuel efficiency, and longer service life compared to older systems. The engine integrates digital control systems and thrust vectoring capabilities, making it suitable for future fighter aircraft, including export variants of the Su-57E.
UEC–Salyut also displayed the AL-41F1S engine, which powers the Su-35 fighter jet. Discussions were held on the possible integration of this engine into India’s Su-30MKI fleet as part of a planned mid-life upgrade initiative.
SJ-100 Regional Jet to Be Produced in India by 2028
Expanding beyond defence, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (PJSC-UAC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly manufacture the SJ-100 regional jet in India.
The agreement was formalised in Moscow on 27 October 2025, with HAL’s Shri Prabhat Ranjan and PJSC-UAC’s Mr. Oleg Bogomolov signing the deal in the presence of HAL Chairman Dr. D. K. Sunil and PJSC-UAC Director General Mr. Vadim Badekha.
The collaboration aims to establish local manufacturing, supply chain, and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) capabilities in India. The SJ-100 will serve as a modern short-haul commuter aircraft for domestic and export markets, symbolising the growing partnership between India and Russia in the civil aviation sector.
MDL and Swan Defence Join Hands to Build LPDs for Indian Navy
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited have signed a strategic agreement to co-design and build Landing Platform Docks (LPDs) for the Indian Navy.
This collaboration follows the Defence Acquisition Council’s approval for the procurement of advanced amphibious ships to strengthen India’s maritime and humanitarian capabilities.
The agreement brings together MDL’s rich experience in naval design, project management, and integration with Swan Defence’s advanced infrastructure, allowing large-scale ship production and reduced delivery timelines.
Safran and Tata Launch LEAP Engine Parts Facility in Hyderabad
In a major boost to India’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Safran Aircraft Engines have inaugurated a state-of-the-art LEAP engine components facility at Adibatla, near Hyderabad.
Located within the Tata Centre of Excellence for Aero Engines, the new plant will produce complex rotating parts for CFM International’s LEAP engines. The event was attended by Telangana IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu, along with senior executives from Tata, Safran, and other dignitaries.
The collaboration stems from a long-term agreement signed in January 2024 and represents a major step in localising advanced aerospace production. LEAP engines, which power many new-generation narrow-body aircraft, offer 15% higher fuel efficiency, lower noise output, and greater reliability compared to older models.
India Issues NOTAM Ahead of Missile Test
India has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) indicating an upcoming missile test scheduled for 4 November 2025 from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) located at Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island, off the coast of Odisha.
The notice, released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), marks a 120-kilometre danger zone extending into the Bay of Bengal to ensure safety for aircraft and maritime traffic.
This notification signals a potential trial of an indigenously developed missile system under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Extensive range safety preparations, including radar tracking, telemetry systems, and naval clearance operations, are expected to precede the test to ensure a secure and interference-free launch.
