Defence Current Affairs 30 December 2025
India has recently achieved several critical milestones across missile technology, aerospace propulsion, naval deterrence, and defence procurement. These developments collectively underscore the nation’s steady progress towards technological self-reliance and enhanced combat readiness across all three services.
Successful Maiden Trial of Long-Range Pinaka Rocket
India marked an important advancement in its artillery capabilities with the successful maiden flight test of the Long-Range Guided Pinaka Rocket (LRGR-120). Conducted on 29 December 2025 at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur in Odisha, the test validated a strike range of up to 120 kilometres. This achievement significantly enhances the Indian Army’s ability to deliver precision firepower deep into adversary territory.
The LRGR-120 represents an advanced, guided evolution of the Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher System, originally conceptualised to replace legacy rocket artillery platforms. Developed primarily by the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Armament Research and Development Establishment, the new variant builds upon earlier Pinaka models that offered ranges between 40 and 90 kilometres.
A key feature of the LRGR-120 is its sophisticated guidance mechanism, which enables a Circular Error Probable of less than 20 metres. Such precision is essential for neutralising high-value targets while minimising collateral damage. Recognising its operational value, the Defence Acquisition Council has cleared a procurement proposal estimated at ₹2,500 crore. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended DRDO and industry partners for strengthening indigenous strike capabilities.
Dry Kaveri Engine Targeted for 2026 Certification
In a decisive move to accelerate indigenous aerospace programmes, the Ministry of Defence has set a firm 2026 deadline for certifying the Dry Kaveri engine. The Gas Turbine Research Establishment has been tasked with meeting this timeline, which is crucial for obtaining Cabinet Committee on Security approval for the Ghatak Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle project.
The Dry Kaveri is a non-afterburning derivative of the original Kaveri turbofan engine developed for the Light Combat Aircraft programme. Producing around 49 kilonewtons of thrust, the engine is considered suitable for stealthy, long-endurance UCAV missions. The Ministry has clearly ruled out temporary foreign engine solutions, emphasising the importance of deploying an indigenous powerplant from the outset in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
High-altitude flight trials of the Dry Kaveri are planned using an Ilyushin Il-76 flying testbed in Russia. Successful completion of these trials by 2026 will serve as the primary benchmark for advancing the Ghatak programme into full-scale prototype development.
India’s Fourth SSBN Advances Towards Sea Trials
India’s sea-based nuclear deterrence received a major boost with the progress of its fourth nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, codenamed S4*. Launched on 16 October 2024 at the Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam, the submarine has entered the fitting-out phase and is preparing for sea trials.
The S4* features a stretched and upgraded design within the Arihant class, enabling a larger missile payload and improved operational endurance. It is armed with the indigenously developed K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missile, which has a range of approximately 3,500 kilometres. This represents a substantial enhancement over the K-15 Sagarika missile carried by the first submarine of the class.
INS Arihant, commissioned in 2016, laid the foundation by validating core SSBN technologies despite initial limitations. The induction of INS Arighaat in August 2024 doubled India’s SSBN strength and demonstrated full compatibility with the K-4 missile. Meanwhile, INS Aridhaman, the third submarine, is nearing commissioning following advanced sea trials. Together, these platforms ensure a credible and continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent.
₹79,000 Crore Defence Acquisition Cleared by DAC
On 29 December 2025, the Defence Acquisition Council approved capital acquisition proposals worth approximately ₹79,000 crore to enhance the combat effectiveness of the Indian Armed Forces. The Acceptance of Necessity allows the services to move forward with detailed procurement processes.
For the Indian Army, approvals include loiter munition systems capable of precision strikes against tactical targets, low-level lightweight radars to counter small unmanned aerial threats, and long-range guided rocket ammunition for the Pinaka system. The Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System Mk-2 will further strengthen protection of both battlefield formations and critical installations.
The Indian Navy received clearance for bollard pull tugs to support harbour operations and high-frequency software-defined radios to ensure secure communications during maritime missions. Additionally, the leasing of high-altitude long-endurance remotely piloted aircraft will significantly enhance maritime surveillance and domain awareness across the Indian Ocean Region.
