Disengagement Process Between India, China
- The disengagement process between the Indian and Chinese troops, initiated a few days ago, is almost over in Depsang and Demchok, according to Defence sources said.
- The Armies of India and China are verifying the vacation of positions and removal of infrastructure by each other there.
- On Friday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed that frontier troops of both nations are engaged in “relevant work” in line with the agreement reached on border issues.
- On October 21, India announced an agreement with China on patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. , ending the over four-year military standoff.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Russia, where both leaders welcomed the agreement on patrolling arrangements along the LAC in eastern Ladakh.
The meeting followed an announcement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) regarding the new patrolling arrangements along the LAC in the India-China border areas.
The border standoff between India and China, which began in 2020 in eastern ladakh along the LAC, was triggered by Chinese military actions and led to a prolonged strain on bilateral relations.
GE Engines’ Tejas Supply To Start In March
- The regular supply of GE 404 engines to power indigenous light combat aircraft (LCA) will start from March next year after being hit by delays due to disruption of supply chains, said people familiar with the matter.
- While the deliveries of LCA Mk1a jets have been delayed due to late supplies of engines, officials have been in regular touch with US manufacturer GE and there is a degree of confidence that things will stabilise by March 2025, they said on condition of anonymity.
- A report from August said that the Indian Air Force (IAF) had expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the LCA Mk1A programme. While the first aircraft was initially scheduled for delivery by March 31, 2024, the report had said that Tejas manufacturer Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) had projected delivery for November 2024.
- General Electric Company was an American multinational conglomerate founded in 1892, incorporated in the state of New York and headquartered in Boston. The company had several divisions, including aerospace, energy, healthcare, and finance.
- Government sources told the news portal that GE’s delay in deliveries was not part of any US “pressure tactics”. Instead, they explained, a South Korean firm, which GE has a tie-up with, has not been able to deliver certain engine components because of financial issues. As a solution, one source reportedly said that the government has told GE to provide India with the transfer of technology for these components so that they can be made here.
US-Taiwan Business Council Announces Support for USD 2 Billion
- The US-Taiwan Business Council has endorsed a potential USD 2 billion arms package from the United States to Taiwan, lauding the arrangement as “an important development” that further bolsters defence ties between the two nations.
- The Council praised both governments in Washington and Taipei, for reaching an agreement on the proposed sale.
- The arms package, valued at USD 2 billion, is expected to include USD 1.16 billion for missile systems and USD 828 million for radar systems.
- Key components include three National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) that Taiwan will acquire for the first time, marking it as only the third regional nation to receive these defence systems, alongside Australia and Indonesia.
Naim Qassem, The New Leader of Hezbollah
- Lebanon-based militant organisation Hezbollah announced Deputy Secretary General Naim Qassem will be its new head on Tuesday (October 29), a little over a month after former head Hassan Nasrallah was killed in Israeli airstrikes.
- Qassem has served as Hezbollah’s deputy chief since 1991. According to Reuters, his political activism began in the Lebanese Shiite Amal Movement, founded in 1974. This movement was one of the precursors of Hezbollah.
- Qassem’s elevation came at a point where the group was facing a leadership vacuum. There is also little indication of the larger conflict seeing a ceasefire or pause in hostilities. The death toll in the Gaza Strip conflict crossed 43,000, officials in Gaza reported Monday.
Triton Island
- According to ‘the Royal Institute of International Affairs,’ also known as ‘Chatham House’ – a British think tank based in London, this strategic location is set to become one of Beijing’s primary signal intelligence bases in the South China Sea, reflecting China’s broader ambitions in the region.
- Satellite imagery suggests that the Chinese military is reportedly constructing a new counter-stealth radar system on a disputed reef in the South China Sea, which would greatly enhance its surveillance capabilities in the area.
- Located in the Paracels — known as the Xisha Islands in China — Triton Island is effectively controlled by Beijing but is also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan.
- China took control of the Paracels from South Vietnam following a 1974 naval clash. (North and South Vietnam formally reunified in 1976) Since then, and especially after the discovery of oil and gas reserves in the surrounding waters, competition for control has intensified. In 2014, Chinese and Vietnamese maritime forces clashed near Triton’s waters.
