A significant milestone in India’s defence collaboration was marked when the 65th National Defence College (NDC) Course, consisting of 130 delegates, visited the Naval Base Karwar on October 30, 2025. This diverse delegation included 45 officers from the Indian Army, 13 from the Indian Air Force, 7 from the Indian Navy, 20 from the Indian Civil Services, and 45 officers from Friendly Foreign Countries (FFCs). This representation reflects the NDC’s dedication to enhancing strategic understanding and fostering global defence partnerships.
The officers arrived at Karwar aboard ships from the Western Fleet, symbolizing joint operational capability as personnel from different services and nations came together at one of the Indian Navy’s strategically vital installations. This arrival not only showcased the logistical efficiency of India’s maritime forces but also served as a testament to the collaborative spirit fostered during the NDC course.
During the visit, delegates were given a comprehensive windshield tour of the advanced infrastructure established under Project Seabird, which is recognized as India’s largest naval base development initiative. The strategic and operational significance of Karwar was discussed extensively, particularly its pivotal role in supporting India’s naval operations along the western coastline. Important topics included maritime security, logistics support, and future expansion plans for the base.
Rear Admiral Vikram Menon, VSM, the Flag Officer Commanding for the Karnataka Naval Area, was instrumental in hosting the delegation. He engaged in discussions regarding the base’s crucial function in enhancing India’s maritime capabilities. Key points of interest included inter-service coordination, the coastal security framework, and the Indian Navy’s contributions towards realizing India’s Indo-Pacific vision.
This visit was pivotal for the NDC participants, offering them insights into the operational philosophy and infrastructure developments of the Indian Navy. The experience was designed to deepen their understanding of the Navy’s vital role in maintaining regional stability and asserting maritime dominance.
The interactions and discussions held at Naval Base Karwar highlighted the Indian Navy’s ongoing commitment to promote jointness, enhance strategic awareness, and build global partnerships amid an evolving security landscape.
