Finnish Government Approves Acquisition of AIM-120D-3 Missiles from the US

The Finnish government has taken a significant step in bolstering its defense capabilities by approving the acquisition of AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) from the United States. This procurement aims to enhance the operational effectiveness of Finland’s fleet of 64 F-35A multirole combat aircraft, which were acquired in 2021 with a budget of approximately $10 billion.

The U.S. has sanctioned the sale of up to 405 AIM-120D-3 missiles to Finland, with the total estimated cost amounting to around $1.07 billion. Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen emphasized the strategic importance of this acquisition, stating, “This procurement will give Finland the latest and most advanced variant of AMRAAM, which will improve our ability to respond to threats in our operating environment.” He added that it will enhance Finland’s interoperability with both the United States and other allied forces.

The comprehensive procurement package includes not just the missiles, but also essential components such as manuals, technical documentation, spare parts, consumables, training, transportation, repair, and support services. This acquisition further solidifies Finland’s military alignment with NATO and the United States, especially following its accession to the alliance earlier in 2023.

Finland’s defense capabilities are already complemented by an unspecified variant of the AMRAAM used in its F/A-18 Hornet fleet and within the NASAMS air defense batteries operated by the Finnish Army. However, the AIM-120D-3 is specifically tailored for the upcoming F-35 fleet.

The AIM-120D-3 represents a significant advancement in missile technology. This latest variant features a hardware refresh that updates the guidance section to counter technological obsolescence. Key improvements include upgraded energy-efficient components in the missile’s guidance system, leading to enhanced battery life and extended operational range. The AIM-120D-3 is also equipped with System Improvement Program-3F software, which improves guidance systems, range, and overall performance, boasting an estimated engagement range of approximately 160 kilometers (99 miles).

This strategic missile acquisition signifies Finland’s commitment to reinforcing its defense posture and ensuring a robust response to evolving security challenges in its region.
