HII Achieves Milestone with Over 700 REMUS Uncrewed Underwater Vehicles Sold Worldwide

HII has announced a significant achievement, surpassing the sale of 700 REMUS uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) to customers across the globe. This landmark underscores the growing demand for these advanced systems, which have been acquired by more than 30 nations, including 14 member states of NATO.

A remarkable statistic highlighted by the company is that over 90 percent of the REMUS UUVs delivered in the past 23 years remain operational, showcasing their reliability and effectiveness in various naval applications. The REMUS family of vehicles plays a crucial role in enhancing naval operations by delivering essential intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. In addition to ISR, these sophisticated systems are also utilized for mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare, and electronic warfare, demonstrating their versatility in maritime security missions.

Equipped with cutting-edge sonar and sensor technologies, REMUS UUVs significantly improve situational awareness in challenging oceanic environments. They can operate independently or in tandem with crewed platforms, thereby expanding operational ranges while minimizing the risk of detection and reducing personnel exposure to hazardous conditions. The vehicles also serve an important role in ensuring safe passage for both naval and commercial vessels in strategically vital sea areas.

The widespread adoption of HII’s REMUS UUVs is evident in the deployments by the US Navy, NATO allies, and other international partners. The US Navy has strategically deployed the REMUS UUVs in critical waterways, including the Persian Gulf, the Baltic Sea, and the Black Sea. Additionally, NATO allies have integrated these systems into joint military exercises throughout the Mediterranean, the North Sea, and into the Arctic region.

In a notable development, the UK Royal Navy recently formalized an agreement to acquire a fleet of HII’s REMUS UUVs, which includes three systems designed for operation at 100-meter depths (328 feet) and five units capable of diving to 300 meters (984 feet). This procurement highlights the UK’s commitment to enhancing its underwater capabilities.

Moreover, in March 2024, HII finalized a contract to deliver a REMUS 620 underwater drone to a client in the Indo-Pacific region. This specific model can operate at depths of up to 600 meters (1,900 feet) while carrying various payloads, further emphasizing the flexibility and effectiveness of the REMUS platform.

In addition to these developments, HII is also engaged in the production of small uncrewed undersea vehicles for the US Navy, under a contract valued at over $347 million that was signed in 2023. This continued investment in advanced underwater technology positions HII as a key player in the domain of maritime defense and underwater operations.
