The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to conduct a significant military exercise in the northern sector of the country from September 22 to September 30, 2025. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the government has outlined plans for these drills, which will take place in close proximity to the borders with Nepal and China—an area recognized for its high strategic sensitivity.

The exercises are strategically situated near the Ngari Gunsa airbase in Tibet, a dual-use facility operated by China at an altitude of 4,274 meters. Operational since 2010, this airbase is considered by Indian defence analysts as a pivotal component in China’s military strategy along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The base’s location and capabilities have heightened concerns in New Delhi, prompting the IAF to bolster its presence in the region.

Attention has also been drawn to the exercise’s proximity to Nepal, a nation historically caught in the dynamics between India and China. As both regional powers vie for influence, Nepal faces increasing geopolitical pressures. Although China has intensified its diplomatic efforts in recent years, trade data highlights India’s dominance in this sphere, supplying approximately 65% of Nepal’s imports compared to China’s share of 15%.

Military analysts suggest that the forthcoming IAF exercise aims to demonstrate India’s aerial preparedness and deterrence capabilities in a challenging high-altitude environment. The timing of the drill, set to commence in less than two weeks, underscores New Delhi’s strategic resolve to fortify its northern defenses amidst evolving regional power dynamics. The exercise will likely serve not only as a show of strength but also as a message to any potential adversaries in the area.
