India is developing a three-layered long-range surface-to-air missile (LRSAM) defence system capable of intercepting hostile planes and missiles from 400 km away. The $2.5 billion project is nearing completion in the country’s defence ministry.
The missile system will consist of three layers of surface-to-air missiles that will target varied ranges, changing India into one of only a few militaries with indigenous capabilities to target airborne enemy assets from such distances.
400 Km Long-Range Surface-To-Air Missile (LRSAM)
In what might be a significant boost to self-reliance in the defence industry, India is developing a three-layered long-range surface-to-air missile (LRSAM) defensive system capable of striking down enemy aircraft and missiles at 400 km ranges.
The proposal to construct a three-layered long-range surface-to-air missile system is nearing completion in the Defence Ministry and is anticipated to be approved soon, according to defence sources. According to them, the over USD 2.5 billion initiative will let India join an elite group of forces with indigenous capability to take down enemy assets in the air from such ranges. The missile system will consist of three layers of surface-to-air missiles, allowing it to hit targets at various ranges.
Surface-to-Air-Missile for India
The surface-to-air missile system development work has been ongoing as India collaborated with Israel to create the medium-range surface-to-air missile system MRSAM, which can strike airborne targets at distances of 70 kilometres or more.
Accordingly, the Indian system would be quite capable, comparable to the S-400 air defence system previously obtained from Russia and installed along the China-Pakistan border. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has achieved notable success in producing air defence weaponry for both ground-based and warship-based systems. After the DRDO took over the LRSAM project, the Indian Navy renamed their indigenous LRSAM system MRSAM.
MRSAM was the term given to a similar indigenous system by the Army and the IAF. The system is also employed by the Chinese military, which has it installed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with India. The Chinese have their own air defence systems as well, although they are less capable than the S-400.
Three S-400 squadrons have already arrived in India and are operational, but the delivery timeline for the remaining two units is unknown. The Indian Air Force, which is focused on fostering indigenisation in defence gear, would be the project lead for the LRSAM project.
