During a significant military standoff termed Operation Sindoor, Indian forces successfully repelled 413 drone attacks aimed at Rajasthan, representing one of the largest aerial defense initiatives in the area’s recent history. The operation commenced on May 7, 2025, following a devastating terrorist strike in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22 that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians and heightened tensions with Pakistan.
In a series of coordinated efforts, Pakistan launched aerial assaults targeting vital Indian military installations across the northern and western sectors, particularly focusing on key air bases in Rajasthan, including Phalodi, Barmer, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, and Sri Ganganagar. Additional regions impacted included Jammu, Srinagar, Pathankot, Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Bhuj. Despite the extensive offensive, India’s air defense network, supported by the Russian-made S-400 missile systems, successfully neutralized all incoming threats without causing damage to infrastructure or civilian casualties.
The S-400 system played a pivotal role in India’s defensive maneuvers, capable of detecting aerial threats up to 600 kilometers away and intercepting them within a 400-kilometer range. This advanced technology was strategically deployed in Rajasthan and Gujarat, enabling the Indian Armed Forces to maintain complete aerial superiority throughout the confrontation.
Air Marshal AK Bharti, the Director General of Air Operations, praised the unified effort, stating, “Our defenses stood like a wall. Whether it was Turkish drones, Chinese projectiles, or Pakistani planes, they could not breach our technology.” The operation received critical support from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which effectively utilized both indigenous and international commercial satellites for real-time threat tracking and analysis.
In retaliation, India conducted precision strikes on nine terrorist infrastructure targets within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Independent media analysis later confirmed visible damage to six Pakistani airfields, including Mushaf and Bholari, although reports indicated that the runways remained partially operational.
Pakistan responded with aerial strikes on 26 Indian sites; however, India’s early warning systems and interception capabilities limited these attacks, preventing significant damage. Local authorities and the Border Security Force (BSF) in Rajasthan maintained heightened vigilance, particularly at the Phalodi air base. A potential disaster was averted in Jaisalmer when an explosive reportedly dropped by a Pakistani drone was successfully defused by the Army’s bomb disposal squad.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi characterized Operation Sindoor as a “measured and calibrated” response to terrorist aggression emanating from Pakistan, specifically naming Lashkar-e-Taiba as responsible for the Pahalgam assault. The Indian government’s approach during the conflict garnered international support, including a public endorsement from a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations who championed India’s right to self-defense.

The seamless collaboration among armed forces, space agencies, and local authorities has been identified as a primary factor behind the operation’s success.
