With nearly 50,000 troops deployed in the eastern Ladakh area, the Indian Army is strengthening its reaction capability and firepower by introducing new weapon systems such as M4 fast reaction trucks and Dhanush howitzers. Modern battle equipment and trucks help the troops stationed at the Nyoma military station, which is located at a height of roughly 14,500 feet.
Bofors Howitzers
The Indian Army has recently introduced a slew of new equipment and technologies that have helped reduce military weariness. The Army recently inducted the made-in-India Dhanush howitzer, which was designed based on the Transfer of Technology for the Bofors howitzers and was upgraded. Captain V Mishra of the Regiment of Artillery stated that the Dhanush howitzer can strike targets up to 48 kilometres away and was integrated into the Eastern Ladakh region last year.

Kalyani M4 QRFV
The M4 Quick Reaction Force Vehicle can transport ten fully outfitted combat-ready troops to advanced locations. The M4 Quick Reaction Force Vehicle, which can take 10 combat-ready armed personnel to forward sites along the Line of Actual Control, is another Made in India platform that appears to be particularly helpful for deploying troops at high speeds to forward locations. According to Army troops stationed in the region, it can travel at rates of 60-80 kilometres per hour even in the tough terrain of the Ladakh sector.
The demand for such light armour-protected vehicles was realised when opposing soldiers used their fast-moving vehicles to reach advanced sites swiftly during early-phase military standoffs. Last year, the Army began inducting M4 Quick Reaction military Vehicles into the military, and the Army intends to induct additional such vehicles in the forward areas of the Eastern Ladakh sector.
The Army has also integrated a considerable number of All-Terrain Vehicles using emergency funding powers granted by the government to aid in carry-out operations following the 2020 standoff. These vehicles, which can carry four to six personnel in a single trip, are used to transport supplies and equipment to advanced posts in order to keep the fighting going. It can also be used to transport troops and equipment to regions where they must be deployed quickly in order to deal with emergency situations.
The vehicles have demonstrated their ability to operate in extremely high altitude areas, including locations where forces were sent for the first time following the 2020 standoff. The Army’s surveillance equipment has also been strengthened with the introduction of the new Tata Rajak system, which can observe or detect persons from a distance of more than 15 kilometres and vehicles from a distance of more than 25 kilometres.
The new equipment is assisting forces in keeping an eye on adversary movement across the LAC. The Army also intends to deploy the Made in India K-9 Vajra self-propelled artillery guns in the eastern Ladakh area, where they have shown to be effective in recent years.
