Former Indian service Chiefs attending Security Conference

Though the Indian elite has always taken a cautious approach to the China-Taiwan dispute, New Delhi is now considering delving deeper into the war. Former chiefs of India’s three services are in Taipei to meet with Taiwan’s government and express India’s views. Admiral Karambir Singh, General M.M. Naravane, and Chief of Air Staff R.K.S. Bhadauria, the former chiefs of the Indian Navy, Army, and Air Force, are in Taipei for the Ketagalan Forum’s 2023 Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue.

With Taiwan continually rejecting China’s territorial claim, Beijing has never ruled out the use of force to seize control of the island republic. Military and strategic specialists predict that China will not engage in military action in the next three to four years. The strong People’s Liberation Army (PLA) navy and air force, on the other hand, will continue to make regular threatening gestures, including probing sallies in the air and in the Taiwan Strait, as well as military rehearsals.

The presence of three former Indian military chiefs in Taipei has sparked much curiosity, particularly about India’s position on Chinese aggression against Taiwan. For more than three years, the Indian armed forces have been at odds with the PLA in high-altitude Ladakh and elsewhere along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), with the PLA undertaking several incursions to alter the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The Indian elite is increasingly concerned that a conflict in the Taiwan Strait will harm India and its economy. As a result, a segment of the Indian leadership believes that Taiwan should be supported in the face of China’s aggressive measures.

The Indian military has also been spurred by New Delhi’s new stance to analyse India’s response in the event of a Chinese strike on Taiwan. Gen. Anil Chauhan’s office, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has urged the three services to come up with proposals and choices for India in the case of a full-fledged crisis. India adheres to the ‘One China policy’ with regard to Taiwan and has no formal diplomatic connections with Taipei.

According to South Block officials, if the US and its allies support Taiwan against China, India may need to reconsider its position, particularly if Washington wants India’s assistance in refuelling its jets and other such requests. In addition, India and the United States have signed a Logistics-Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA) to assist each other in times of need.

About LEMOA

LEMOA allows for refuelling and replenishment at specified military sites on either side. Food, water, billeting, transportation, petroleum, oils, lubricants, clothing, communication services, medical services, storage services, training services, spare parts and components, repair and maintenance services and calibration services are also covered by the agreement.
