Indian Navy MARCOS to be part of Gaganyaan’s Post-Landing Operations

The Indian Navy’s elite marine commando team, popularly known as Marcos, will assist in the retrieval of the Gaganyaan Mission if it crashes down into the ocean from space. The Indian Space Research Organisation and the Navy have announced a cooperative plan to educate the crew participating in the capsule’s retrieval procedures after it lands in the water with astronauts on board. Divers, MARCOs, medical professionals, communicators, technologists, and navy aviators are among those involved in recovery operations.

Vice Adm Atul Anand, Director General of Naval Operations, Dr Unnikrishnan Nair, Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), and Dr Umamaheshwaran R, Director of ISRO’s Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC), jointly published the training material. The proposal was unveiled at the INS Garuda Water Survival Training Facility (WSTF) in Kochi.

The document outlines the training plan for the mission’s Crew Module recovery. It establishes overall training needs for various teams engaging in recovery operations adding that the training is planned in progressive steps, beginning with unmanned recovery and progressing to human recovery training in the harbour and open sea situations. The recovery operations are being led by the Indian Navy in coordination with other government agencies. ISRO also gave the Navy the Crew Module Recovery Model for crew training. The crew capsule’s mass and shape simulated mockup will be used for familiarisation and training of Gaganyaan recovery crews.

The Indian space agency is moving quickly to send Indians into space, having completed two major tests with the Gaganyaan mission in April of this year. The L110-G Vikas Engine, which will power the mission, was tested. ISRO also conducted Crew Module Propulsion System System Demonstration Model (SDM) experiments for the Gaganyaan mission. ISRO is now planning the first abort test of the Crew Module, which will include firing a modified launch vehicle with the simulated crew module on top.
