From January 12 to 26, India and Japan will conduct their first air exercise. This will be the first joint exercise between the Indian Air Force and the Japanese Air Self-Defense Forces. Veer Guardian 2023 will take place at Hyakuri Air Base in Japan.
Sukhoi-30MKI Squadron Leader Avni Chaturvedi will lead the Indian team. According to reports, this is the first time a female fighter pilot will lead an Indian fighter squadron in a bilateral exercise with a foreign partner. Four Su-30 MKI, two C-17, and one IL-78 aircraft will be part of the Indian contingent, while four F-2s (a Japanese development of the US-built F-16 fighter) and four F-15s will be part of the Japanese contingent.
About Veer Guardian 2023
The air exercise is intended to strengthen the two sides’ air defense cooperation. According to a statement issued by the Indian Ministry of Defense, the bilateral air exercise will include “the conduct of various aerial combat drills between the two Air Forces… multi-domain air combat missions in a complex environment and the exchange of best practices.” The exercise will “fortify the long-standing bond of friendship and enhance the avenues of defense cooperation between the two Air Forces,” according to the statement.
Concerns shared by India and Japan about Chinese aggression, Beijing’s expanding footprint in the Indian and Pacific oceans, and threats to supply chains have brought New Delhi and Tokyo together on a strategic level. This has been especially true over the last three years, with India and China locked in a border standoff in Galwan, Ladakh. The fact that Modi met with Kishida twice last year for leader-level meetings reflects the relationship’s growing strategic convergence and new sense of purpose.
