INS Arihant successfully launched Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM)

On October 14, 2022, the INS Arihant was responsible for the launch of K-15 SLBM a Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM), which was a success. The missile was fired to a range that had been previously determined, and it hit the designated region in the Bay of Bengal with an extremely high degree of precision. Validation testing was performed on all of the operational and technological characteristics of the weapon system.

It is essential that the user training launch of the SLBM by INS Arihant was successful, as this proves crew proficiency and validates the SSBN programme, which is a key component of India’s nuclear deterrence capabilities. It is in line with India’s objective to have “Credible Minimum Deterrence,” which is the foundation of its “No First Use” promise, for the country to possess a retaliatory capability that is robust, survivable, and assured.

Why do the armed forces use submarines?

  • An attack on a country’s territory can happen on land, in the air, or in the ocean. During a war, submarines are used to patrol their own waters and attack enemy ships.
  • Submarines are also called “The Silent Service” because they can stay under water for months without being seen.
  • During the first World War (1914–1918), when Germany used them to destroy merchant ships on the surface, submarines became an important part of naval warfare.
  • India is the sixth country in the world to put nuclear weapons that can be fired from the sea.

All About INS Arihant

  • The Indian Navy has one submarine that runs on nuclear power. The Ballistic Missile Submarine (SSBN) INS Arihant (S2) is part of the Arihant class of submarines. It was made in India and can carry 6,000 tonnes of cargo.
  • Under the Arihant class, there are three more Ballistic Missile Submarines under construction. The Indians built the INS Arighat (S3), S4, and S4. S3 can carry 6,000 tonnes, while S4 and S4 can carry 7,000 tonnes.
  • These are ballistic missile submarines in the Indian Navy. They are powered by nuclear power. As part of the Advanced Technology Vessel Project (ATV), which was meant to make nuclear submarines, they were made. The Indian government spent about 90,000 crores on research and development for this project. The first ship in this class is the INS Arihant, which was put into service in August 2016. After the nuclear tests at Pokhran in the 1990s, the ATV Project got started.
  • Image when submerged, thanks to a single propeller with seven blades that is powered by an 83 MW pressurised water reactor that runs on enriched uranium. The prototype reactor built by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam went critical on November 11, 2003, and was officially declared operational on September 22, 2006.
  • Under this class, four ships are planned. The INS Arihant was put into service on July 26, 2009, which was Kargil Victory Day. Its sea trials began on December 13, 2014. After sea trials were done on February 23, 2016, the 6,000-ton ship was put into service in August 2016. Arighat is the name of the second ship in the Arihant Class. The INS Arighat’s sea trials, which started in 2017, are now over. The ship will be put into service in August 2022. Soon, the last two submarines, S4 and S4*, and an S5 that was just planned will be launched.
