The Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) has unveiled its ongoing work on a cutting-edge Hypersonic Glide Vehicle (HGV). The DRDL HGV is built on a wave-rider architecture and is designed to achieve unparalleled hypersonic speeds.
DRDL Advanced Hypersonic Glide Vehicle (HGV)
The installation of a Reaction Control System (RCS) that uses endothermic fuels for high-temperature applications is one of the primary elements of this hypersonic glide vehicle. Endothermic fuels have the unusual capacity to absorb heat from their surroundings, making them excellent for usage in high-temperature environments.
DRDL is also putting an Air Breathing Engine (ABE) into the HGV. The ABE is a scramjet engine that is actively cooled and designed to propel the vehicle at hypersonic speeds. Scramjet engines work by compressing incoming air before combustion, removing the need for onboard oxidizers and allowing for high-speed travel. In addition, DRDL is using
Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology to construct the HGV’s Thermal Protection System (TPS). AM, often known as 3D printing, enables the fabrication of elaborate structures and complex shapes. DRDL can use AM to create TPS components that are lightweight, durable, and resistant to the severe temperatures encountered during hypersonic flight.
Hypersonic Flights
Hypersonic Flights have tremendous heat and aerodynamic forces, and hypersonic flight at speeds greater than Mach 5 (about 6,174 km/h or 3,836 mph) brings new engineering challenges. However, successful hypersonic vehicle development and deployment can provide considerable advantages in terms of rapid response, long-range precise strike capabilities, and better defence capabilities.
