Italy's Saipem Unveils Hybrid Underwater Drone for Navy Mine Countermeasure Operations

Italy’s Saipem, a prominent engineering firm, has unveiled an advanced underwater drone intended to play a vital role in the Italian Navy’s mine countermeasure operations. Named Hydrone-D, this new hybrid autonomous underwater vehicle (HUAV) represents a significant technological advancement in underwater defense capabilities.

The Hydrone-D can be operated remotely at impressive depths exceeding 600 meters (1,969 feet), enabling it to navigate challenging underwater environments where conventional methods may falter. One of its key features is its ability to be equipped with a variety of side-scan sonars that enhance its detection capabilities. This technology aids in identifying submerged naval mines, which pose a substantial threat to maritime security.

In addition to its scanning capabilities, the Hydrone-D is designed to carry up to four explosive charges, allowing it to neutralize these threats effectively. This combination of detection and neutralization positions the Hydrone-D as an essential tool for modern naval operations, especially in a world that requires enhanced measures for maritime safety.

The introduction of this sophisticated drone marks a step forward for Italy’s defense initiatives, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to advancing its naval technology and operational readiness. As the Italian Navy looks to the future, the Hydrone-D could become integral in safeguarding national waters and interests against emerging threats in the maritime domain.
