The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the air arm of the Indian Armed Forces. Its complement of personnel and aircraft assets ranks fourth amongst the air forces of the world. Its primary mission is to secure Indian airspace and to conduct aerial warfare during armed conflict. It was officially established on 8 October 1932.

IAF has been actively participating in operational international exercises, wherein collaborative engagements are enhanced. A multinational Exercise with friendly forces afforded a unique opportunity to gain valuable learning to all the participating forces. The knowledge gained, lessons learned and bonds made during all the exercises will go a long way in bolstering the professional capabilities of the participating forces. Here we are going to cover the complete list of Indian Air Force Military Exercises for the years 2021- 2022.

Desert Knight-21 Exercise  

  • Participating Countries: India & France
    • Conducted at: Air Force Station Jodhpur
    • Date: Jan 21
    • Aim: to strengthen the bilateral relationship, enhance mutual understanding and interoperability
    • About: The Indian Air Force aircraft participating in the exercise will include Mirage 2000, Su-30 MKI, Rafale, IL-78 Flight Refueling Aircraft, AWACS and AEW&C aircraft.

ZAPAD 2021  

  • Type: Multinational Ex
    • Conducted at: Nizhniy, Russia
    • Date: 03 to 16 September 2021.
    • Aim: Counter-Terrorism Op.
    • About: ZAPAD 2021 is one of the theatre-level exercises of the Russian Armed Forces and will focus primarily on operations against terrorists.

Blue Flag Exercise  

  • Type: Multinational Ex
    • Conducted at: Israel
    • Date: October 2021.
    • Aim: To enhance interoperability among participating nations
    • About: It is the largest and most advanced aerial exercise ever hosted in Israel.

Konkan Shakti 2021

  • Participating Countries: India- UK
    • Conducted at: Mumbai
    • Edition: 12th
    • Date: October 21 and 27 2021
    • Aim: to derive “mutual benefits” from each other’s experiences.

Joint Exercise in Indian Ocean Region (IOR)  

  • Type: India-US
    • Conducted at: Mumbai
    • Date: 16th November 2021
    • Aim: to integrate the efforts of all maritime stakeholders
    • About: An offshore security exercise, code-named ‘Prasthan’ was conducted in the Offshore Development Area (ODA) off Mumbai on 16th November 2021, under the aegis of Headquarters, Western Naval Command. Conducted every six months

Exercise Eastern Bridge-VI 2022

  • Participating Countries: India &Oman
    • Conducted at: Air Force Station Jodhpur
    • Date: from 21 to 25 February 2022.
    • Aim: providing operational exposure and undertaking mutual exchange of best practices
    • About: The exercise provided an opportunity for fruitful interaction between IAF and RAFO elements through mutual exchange of experience and operational knowledge.

PASCHIM LEHAR (XPL-2022)

  • Type: Domestic Ex
  • Conducted at: West Coast, India
  • Date: 5-25 January 2022
  • Aim: To operate together under realistic conditions, in responding to contemporary maritime challenges
  • About: Western Naval Command Indian Navy, IAF, Indian Army, and Coast Guard participated in this exercise.

AMPHEX – 21

  • Type: Domestic Ex
  • Date: Jan 2021
  • Conducted At: A&NC and Bay of Bengal
  • About: The exercise was aimed at validating India’s capabilities to safeguard the territorial integrity of its island territories.

TROPEX 21

  • Type:  Biennial Theatre Level Operational Readiness Exercise (TROPEX 21)
  • Date: Feb 2021
  • Conducted At: IOR
  • Theme: ‘Combat Ready, Credible and Cohesive force’.
