Squadron leader Avani Chaturvedi of the Indian Air Force will be the first female fighter pilot to represent her country in the international aerial war games.

From January 16 to January 26, the Hyakuri Air Base in Omitama, Japan, and the Iruma Air Base in Sayama, Japan, will host the exercise Veer Guardian 2023.

According to news agency ANI, the exercise Veer Guardian 2023 will take place between January 16 and January 26 at the Hyakuri Air Base in Omitama, Japan, and its adjacent airspace, as well as the Iruma Air Base in Sayama.

  • Avani Chaturvedi is a Sukhoi-30 fighter pilot based in Jodhpur.
  • The 29-year-old first flew the MiG-21 Bison in IAF Squadron service after she completed her training on Hawk Advanced Jet Trainers.
  • Squadron leader Bhavna Kanth, a classmate of Chaturvedi’s and one of the trio of first female fighter pilots in the service, described the Su-30MKIs used by the Indian Air Force as one of the best and most deadly platforms equipped with indigenous armament systems.
  • After being assigned to the fighter stream, Chaturvedi, flying officers Kanth and Mohana Singh, and others have become the most recognisable female faces in the IAF.   • Avani Chaturvedi completed her training at Hyderabad Air Force Academy. Her inspiration to fly fighter jets comes from her brother who is in the Army. Her father, Dinkar Chaturvedi, is an executive engineer in Water Resource Department of Madhya Pradesh government and her mother is a homemaker.
  • Avani Chaturvedi’s accomplishment has put India on the global list of countries such as the United States, Israel, Britain, and Pakistan, where women fly fighter jets. Congresswoman Martha McSally, a top American lawmaker, who was her country’s first female fighter pilot, has congratulated Flying Officer Avani Chaturvedi for breaking India’s glass ceiling by becoming the first Indian woman to fly a fighter jet solo.
  • “She (Avani) always used to say that she would become Kalpana Chawla someday,” her mother Savita told. Avani’s mother revealed that her daughter had kept the news of her appearing for IAF exam a secret till the last minute. It was only after she received the selection letter, the news about Avani joining the IAF was disclosed. She was inspired to join the armed forces by her brother who is a Lieutenant in the Indian Army.
