Nayak Madan Singh Gurjar of Indian Army dies of cardiac arrest on duty in Kashmir

In a heart-wrenching incident that has left the community in mourning, Nayak Madan Singh Gurjar of the Indian Army passed away from sudden cardiac arrest while on duty in the high-stress Gurez sector of Jammu and Kashmir. The 38-year-old soldier, originally from Baserda village in the Khetri subdivision, was serving with the 20 Grenadiers regiment. His untimely death comes during a period of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, coinciding with the ongoing military operation known as ‘Operation Sindoor’.

Just recently, Madan Singh had returned to Baserda on leave, cherishing precious moments with his family. However, as hostilities along the border escalated, he received orders to return to duty on April 30, necessitating the cancellation of his leave. Despite the emotional burden of leaving his loved ones, he honored his commitment and reported back to his post, unaware that this would be his final farewell.

Reports indicate that the cardiac arrest suffered by the soldier was likely aggravated by the extreme weather conditions and the intense stress typical of forward areas in Jammu and Kashmir. In an effort to shield his family from immediate distress, the news of his passing has not yet been conveyed to them. Currently, only a few senior villagers and army officials are informed, with discreet preparations underway for his final rites.

Madan Singh’s mortal remains are scheduled to arrive in Delhi by air from Jammu at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Following this, the Indian Army, alongside district authorities, will escort his body by road to Baserda, accompanied by a ceremonial procession under the Indian Tricolour, commencing from the Haryana border. Villagers and officials are poised to pay tribute to their fallen hero with all due military honors, with plans in place for a dignified and respectful final journey.

Hailing from a family with a rich military legacy, Nayak Madan Singh’s elder brother currently serves as Subedar with the 5 Grenadiers regiment in Assam, while his younger brother is a Captain at the Ordnance Factory. His family includes his father, Malaram Gurjar, his mother, Ghoghdi Devi, his wife, Veerangana Anita Devi, and his son, Prince, who is in seventh grade.

Baserda village is known for its strong tradition of military service, and Madan Singh’s sacrifice is seen as a poignant addition to its storied commitment to the nation. Local leaders and ex-servicemen’s groups have voiced their profound sorrow over this loss, urging the government to extend all support to the bereaved family and to recognize the sacrifice made by their son at the highest levels.

Residents from Baserda and surrounding areas are expected to gather in significant numbers to pay their respects. The district administration is working closely with the Indian Army to ensure a seamless and dignified farewell, with arrangements for a gun salute and traditional rites already in place.

Madan Singh’s death, occurring amid rising border tensions, underscores the immense pressures faced by soldiers beyond active combat scenarios. In the evolving context of the Indo-Pak conflict, narratives like his remind the nation of the personal sacrifices made for security.

His life exemplifies a deep commitment to duty, discipline, and love for the country. Nayak Madan Singh Gurjar will forever be remembered as a devoted soldier and a true son of the soil, who served his nation valiantly until his last breath.
