Ukraine using Soviet 122mm MRL system with Pakistani rockets

Is Pakistan remaining neutral in the Ukraine conflict or selling out to Ukraine? This question has arisen in light of evidence that Ukrainian troops are employing Pakistan’s 122mm Yarmuk HE-Frag missiles. The Pakistani ammunition is loaded into a Soviet 9M22U MRL by the Ukrainians.

Pakistan has long denied supplying weapons to Ukraine, but this is not the first instance of Pakistani munitions being used in the conflict. However, it is entirely possible that this type of missile was provided to Ukraine by a third country rather than Pakistan. As a result, there is currently no documentary evidence of direct export from Islamabad to Kyiv. However, there are reports that Pakistan has supplied the Ukrainian armed forces with at least 10,000 missiles of this type. According to India, Islamabad has used the well-known strategy of supplying weapons through third countries to avoid Moscow’s wrath since the beginning of the war. According to the India Times, Islamabad delivered thousands of missiles to Kyiv via ports in Poland and Germany.

What is 122mm Yamruk?

122mm Yarmuk rockets are Pakistani rockets with a HE-Frag warhead. The missile has a range of 20.5 km. The Yarmouk is Pakistan’s equivalent of the 9M22U missile used by the Soviet Union and now Russia to operate the BM-21 Grad. A rocket weighs about 66 kg. The rocket’s top flight speed is 1,400 km/h. The rocket is not steerable and is powered by a solid-fuel rocket engine.

A surface-to-surface artillery rocket, 122 mm HE [MBRL], can be fired from one or more tubes. When used against personnel or light materials, it produces a burst-and-shatter effect. In addition to Germany and Poland, there is a strong possibility that the United Kingdom will be directly involved in the supply of arms to Pakistan. There were reports last year that a classified cargo airlift had been built between Poland and Pakistan, which was controlled by the UK.

Pakistan Refutes the Claim

Pakistan maintains its denial of any involvement in arming Ukraine. Following its neutral policy, Pakistan even denied reports that it was preparing to supply tanks to Ukraine, calling them false. “Reports of delivery of defence items from Pakistan to Ukraine are not accurate,” said Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, defending the neutrality thesis.
