US Air Force Conducts Annual Nuclear Convoy Course Exercise with MH-139 Grey Wolf Helicopter

US Convoy Response Forces have successfully concluded a week-long annual Nuclear Convoy Course exercise aimed at reinforcing security protocols for nuclear transport operations. This training event took place at the Camp Guernsey Joint Training Center in Wyoming, with a key focus on evaluating the capabilities of the MH-139 Grey Wolf helicopter, among other systems, in the context of nuclear convoy missions.

Throughout the course, various squadrons participated in threat-based scenarios that mimicked potential real-world challenges faced by nuclear convoys. The exercise was designed to rigorously assess their response capabilities while simultaneously integrating advanced technologies into established security measures.

Central to the training was the MH-139 Grey Wolf, which was deployed to provide aerial security and facilitate rapid mobility in support of nuclear transport tasks. In addition to this, the exercise also evaluated the effectiveness of a Payload Transporter Replacement vehicle, which plays a crucial role in the safe and efficient movement of intercontinental ballistic missile components from base.

Participants took the opportunity to apply and test updated Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs), ensuring they were in line with current operational demands for system deployment. Master Sgt. Charles Watson of the 90th Missile Security Operations Squadron highlighted the value of the Nuclear Convoy Course. He noted that it enhances the preparedness of the defenders by providing insight into real-world threats and allows for a critical evaluation of the effectiveness of existing TTPs. This reflective process will guide further training and improvements once they return to their home station.

The MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopter itself is a dual-pilot, twin-engine aircraft derived from the commercial AW139, which has been fortified with military-grade communication, navigation, identification, and survivability features. In 2024, Boeing secured a notable $178-million contract to develop seven additional MH-139A helicopters for the US Air Force, following a previous agreement for 13 units valued at $285 million initiated the year before. Developmental testing for the MH-139A program commenced in 2022, marking a significant step toward its integration into US military operations.
