Five Women Cadets will graduate from the Officers Training Academy (OTA), the first group of women to serve in combat capacities in the army. The cadets for the short service commission will graduate on April 29. When the commissioning board met at OTA on Saturday, they decided to award combat jobs. According to an OTA statement, the academy’s female cadets smashed yet another glass ceiling.
Govt Approved the Commissioning of Women in the Artillery Regiment
Even as the first five female cadets are poised to be commissioned into frontline artillery regiments after graduating from the Officers’ Training Academy in Chennai on April 29, the Army has increased efforts to train women officers for “command and leadership roles” as Colonels and beyond.”The Army has initiated a series of concurrent actions at multiple levels to ensure the force swiftly transits towards inclusivity by empowering women officers for leadership roles,” a senior officer said on Saturday. “For example, a specialized ‘Senior Command’ course was recently organized at the Army War College in Mhow to prepare female officers for the rigors of command by orienting them on all arms perspectives of operational, intelligence, logistics, and administrative aspects,” he added.
This comes after the Army appointed 108 women officers to command positions at the Colonel level earlier this year, with “multiple policy waivers being granted” through a special selection board.”The government created 150 new positions specifically for these female officers.” As a result, there is no effect on the number of male officer vacancies,” the officer explained. Women officers began receiving permanent commissions (PC) in the Army in 2020-21, rather than being compelled to retire after only 10-14 years as short-service commission (SSC) officers. The big step in the OTA passing-out parade is to induct women officers for the first time in the Regiment of Artillery, which has over 280 units managing a variety of howitzers, guns, and multiple-launch rocket systems.
