DAILY CURRENT AFFAIRS 01 – 02 May 2022

Gujarat & Maharashtra Formation Day

  • In 1960 on the same day, the existing state of Maharashtra was formed. The States Reorganisation Act, 1956, defined boundaries for states within India on the basis of languages.
  • Then Bombay had people speaking various languages like Marathi, Gujarati, kutchi and Konkani, which obviously did not work out. So, the Sanyukt Maharastra Andolan started demanding a separate state.
  • The protest continued till 1960 when the Bombay Reorganization Act was passed by India’s Parliament and state of Maharashtra was formed along with Mumbai. The legislation came into effect on May 1, 1960.

International Workers’ Day

  • International Workers’ Day, also known as International Labour Day, is celebrated across the globe on May 1. The day is set aside in honour of workers and labourers across industries and sectors. The objective of the day is not only to celebrate the contribution of workers but also to empower them to understand their rights.
  • In several countries, Labour Day is also a national holiday with many organisations backing special campaigns for the betterment of their employees.
  • The origin of Labour Day can be traced back to the United States of America in the 19th Century. May 1 in particular was chosen as the date to mark Labour Day to commemorate the nationwide strike for an eight-hour day in 1886 that began on May 1 and ended as the Haymarket affair in Chicago US. The Haymarket affair refers to the tragic incident where a labour protest rally turned violent after someone threw a bomb at the police leading to the death of seven police officers and at least four civilians.

New Foreign Secretary Appointed

  • Senior IFS officer Vinay Mohan Kwatra today assumed charge as India’s new Foreign Secretary.
  • He succeeded incumbent Harsh Vardhan Shringla. A 1988 batch IFS officer, Mr. Kwatra was earlier serving as India’s Ambassador to Nepal.

Hottest April Recorded In 122 Years

  • India Meteorological Department (IMD) says Northwest and Central India have experienced the hottest April in 122 years. Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh experienced the hottest April in over 122 years.
  • As per the IMD, the average maximum temperature in April was recorded to be the highest-ever at 37.78 degree Celsius for central India, while it stood at 35.9 degrees for northwest India, nearly 3.35 degrees above normal.
  • The all-India temperature was the fourth-highest at 35.05 degree Celsius since 1901.

Joint Conference Of CM Of States And CJ Of High Courts

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a judicial system that can deliver easy justice, speedy justice, and justice for all. He said, our vision in Azadi ka Amrit Kaal should be of such a judicial system.
  • He was addressing the inaugural session of the Joint Conference of Chief Ministers of States and Chief Justices of High Courts in New Delhi yesterday.
  • The Prime Minister said, our priority should be questions like, what kind of judicial system would we like to see when the country completes 100 years of Independence. 
  • The Prime Minister said, the Government considers the possibilities of technology in the judicial system as an essential part of the Digital India Mission. He said, the e-Courts project is being implemented in mission mode in the country.
  •  The Prime Minister insisted on encouraging local languages in courts saying, it will increase the confidence of the common people in the judicial system.
  • Mr Modi said, the Judiciary is the guardian of the Constitution and the Legislature represents the aspirations of the citizens adding that this balance will prepare the roadmap for an effective and time-bound judicial system in the country.
  • Talking about under-trial prisoners, the Prime Minister said, today there are about 3.5 lakh such prisoners in the country. He said, most of them are from poor or ordinary families and urged the  Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts to give priority to their cases.
  • Chief Justice of India N. V. Ramana said, the law should be made after thorough debates and discussions incorporating the needs and aspirations of the concerned people.
  • Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju and Chief Ministers of Several States and Union Territories were present in the conference.

Semicon India Conference 2022

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Semicon India Conference-2022 on Friday. This three-day event will take place in Bengaluru.
  • The conference is envisioned as the launch pad to kick start country’s ambition in becoming the global semiconductor hub and nurture the chip design and manufacturing ecosystem.
  • Eminent experts from industry associations, research organizations and academia will take part in this conference.
  • The flagship conference is the first step towards actualizing the India Semiconductor Mission. The event will help in showcasing the present capabilities, technology trends, market opportunities and investment in research and development in the country. It will also showcase innovations by start-ups and key projects undertaken by the academic institutions.

India’s First Ethanol Plant Inaugurated In Bihar

  • In Bihar country’s first ethanol plant was inaugurated in Purnea district yesterday. On this occasion Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said ethanol production would help reduce the cost of petrol and generate fresh employment opportunities in the state.
  • The rupees 105 crore plant set up by a private investor is the first one developed since the Union government approved the Bihar government’s ethanol production and promotion policy -2021.
  • The ethanol plant set up with the latest technology using zero waste discharge, has been built in 15 acres. It would buy 130 tonnes of rice husk and 150 tonnes of maize or rice from farmers every day. It is country’s first grain-based ethanol plant.

Kerala Games 2022

  • The maiden Kerala Games- 2022, a mega multi-sporting event conducted by the  Kerala Olympics Association gets underway in Thiruvananthapuram.
  • State Sports Minister V. Abdurrahman formally inaugurated the event at the Kerala University Stadium last evening.
  • The 10-day  Kerala Games will feature competitions in 24 sports disciplines at over 10 venues.
  • Sportspersons from across the State are expected to participate.
  • A marathon was held in the capital early this morning ahead of the event.
  • The state is all set to kick-start the inaugural edition of the Kerala Games 2022 from May 1 onwards.
  • The competitions will be held in 24 events across 19 venues for 10 days.
  • The university stadium here will be the venue for the athletics competitions on May 7 and 8.

Asia Badminton Championships

  • Asia Badminton Championships, India’s P.V. Sindhu today won her second Asian bronze medal after a heartbreaking three-game loss to top-seed and defending champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the semifinal in Manila.
  • The two-time Olympic medallist and former world champion, Sindhu had the match in her control after clinching the opening game 21-13 and leading 13-11 in the second.
  • However, a point penalty for time-wasting for Sindhu completely changed the complexion of the match as from that point onwards, it was her opponent who found her rhythm and never let Sindhu regroup.
  • Sindhu was always trailing in the decider and ultimately, lost the tie.
  • Yesterday itself, Sindhu assured a medal in the championship when she defeated, He Big Jiao of China 21-9,13-21 and 21-19 in the quarterfinal.
