10 Years of Agni V
- It was in April back in 2012, that India for the first time had tested the Agni V ICBM that had a range of over 5000km and that could hit not only the whole of China but also as far as targets in Europe but also made many of India’s friendly countries nervous about country’s ICBM program that in last 10 years it’s more or less meant curtains on development of land-based intercontinental ballistic missile program in the country.
- Agni V unlike other missiles has been sparingly tested only 8 times in the last 10 years as India doesn’t want to be seen as trigger happy nuclear state. In the last few years, Agni-V also has disappeared from the military parade that takes place on Republic Day. India is the only country in the so-called ” nuclear elite ” group of big 5 that wants to maintain a low profile on its Agni-V program.
- Agni V is primarily for enhancing India’s nuclear deterrence against China. Until recently, the longest range missile India had was Agni-III, with a range of 3000–3500 km. If launched from central India this range was not sufficient to reach targets in the extreme eastern and northeastern regions of China. Most of the important economic centers of China lay on its eastern seaboard.
- The missile will allow India to strike targets across Asia and into Europe. The missile’s range will allow the Indian military to target all of China from Agni-V bases, in central and southern India, further away from China. The missile is also likely to be similar to other missiles with a range of 10,000 km. The missile was designed to be easy to transport by road, through the utilisation of a canister-launch missile system, which is distinct from those of the earlier Agni missiles.
Defence Ministry’s Procurement Order Via E-market Portal Recorded at Rs 15,047 Crore
- The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Saturday said its procurement orders using the government e-Market (GeM) portal reached an all-time high of Rs 15,047 crore in 2021-22. It said the amount is a jump of more than 250 per cent compared to last year’s procurement through the portal.
- “Procurement orders by the MoD through Government e-Market (GeM) portal have reached an all-time high of Rs 15,047.98 crore for the financial year 2021-22,” the ministry said in a statement. The GeM was started in August 2016 to revamp the old tender process and bring greater probity and transparency in government procurement through digitization.
- The MOD said”, The MoD is committed to contributing significantly to the Government’s vision of promoting digitisation and transparency in consonance with Digital India”.
Reducing The Size Of The Indian Army
- The Department of Military Affairs (DMA) is exploring a proposal for a three-year Tour of Duty (ToD) for non-commissioned personnel or Jawans that first emerged under the late Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat.
- The case for a three-year stint for Jawans stems from a desire to curb the high revenue budget covering salaries and pensions of the Indian Army. According to the proposal, following their three-year ToD, the decommissioned personnel who would still be in their 20s can be absorbed by the state police forces or service the security requirements of corporate India.
- The IA consumes a significant part of its allocated budget leaving little for capital expenditure or money for new weapons and platforms impacting the equipment modernisation of the service. There are several objections that have been proffered for why it is wise not to pursue this latest proposal.

INS Vikrant To Be Handed Over To Indian Navy In May
- The INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC), will be handed over to the Indian Navy in May, reports The New Indian Express. The aircraft carrier, which has been constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), will be named “INS Vikrant” after it is handed over to the Indian Navy.
- Around 60 percent of the components of the aircraft carrier are indigenous while the remaining 40 percent have been imported.
- INS Vikrant, also known as Indigenous Aircraft Carrier 1 (IAC-1), is an aircraft carrier constructed by the Cochin Shipyard Limited for the Indian Navy. It is the first aircraft carrier to be built in India. It is named ‘Vikrant’ as a tribute to India’s first aircraft carrier, Vikrant.
- The name Vikrant means “courageous”. The motto of the ship is “Jayema Saṁ Yudhi Spr̥dhaḥ”, which means “I defeat those who fight against me”.
Over 1,000 Indian Peacekeepers Get UN Award For Serving In South Sudan
- Over 1,100 Indian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were awarded UN medals, honouring them for their exceptional service in the strife-torn East African country.
- India is one of the largest troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions. Currently, 2,385 Indian military personnel, the second-highest after Rwanda, and 30 police personnel are deployed with the UNMISS.
- “It is an honour to receive this medal, which will embellish my uniform for the rest of my career. We provide medical services to peacekeepers and the local population, but we also share our knowledge on prevention of diseases and gender-based violence,” the report quoted Major Pooja Nair, a doctor and one of only two women in the current Indian contingent, as saying.
- Peacekeeping by the United Nations is a role held by the Department of Peace Operations as an “instrument developed by the organization as a way to help countries torn by conflict to create the conditions for lasting peace”. It is distinguished from peacebuilding, peacemaking, and peace enforcement although the United Nations does acknowledge that all activities are “mutually reinforcing” and that overlap between them is frequent in practice.
Indian Army celebrated 84th Armour Day

- With the passage of time, the Indian Army became better equipped. In 1943, the Indian Armour updated itself to the Sherman tanks (M4) of American origin.
