Nation Remembers Mahatma Gandhi on His 74th Death Anniversary

  • The nation is paying homage to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 74th death anniversary today. The day is also observed as Martyrs’ Day. Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on this day in 1948.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind laid a wreath at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in the national capital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral tributes.
  • In a tweet, PM said, it is our collective endeavor to further popularise his noble ideals. Mr. Modi said, today, on Martyrs’ Day, he is paying homage to all the great people who courageously safeguarded our nation. Their service and bravery will always be remembered.
  • After Gandhi’s funeral in 1948, his ashes were divided into more than 20 portions and dispatched across India so people around the country could mourn his death by holding memorials. Some portions even ended up outside the country.

India-ASEAN Digital Work Plan 2022 Approved In 2nd ASEAN Digital Ministers Meet

  • The 2nd ASEAN Digital Ministers meeting was held in virtual mode yesterday. The meeting was co-chaired by India’s Minister of State for Communications Devusinh Chauhan and Myanmar’s Minister of Transport and Communications Admiral Tin Aung San. India-ASEAN Digital Work Plan 2022 was approved in the meeting.
  • The Work Plan includes a system for combating the use of stolen and counterfeit mobile handsets and a Wi-Fi Access network interface for nationwide public internet.  It also includes capacity building and knowledge sharing in emerging areas in Information and Communication Technologies such as Internet of Things, 5G, Advanced Satellite Communication, and Cyber Forensics.

30th Foundation Day of NCW

  • The National Commission for Women (NCW) is the statutory body of the Government of India, generally concerned with advising the government on all policy matters affecting women. It was established on 31 January 1992 under the provisions of the Indian Constitution, as defined in the 1990 National Commission for Women Act.
  • The first head of the commission was Jayanti Patnaik. As of 30 November 2018, Rekha Sharma is the chairperson.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the 30th Foundation Day program of the National Commission for Women NCW, this evening through video conferencing. AIR correspondent reports that Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani will also be present on the occasion.
  • “The theme of the program is ‘She The Change Maker’, aimed at celebrating the achievements of women in different fields. The State Commissions for Women and  Department of Women and Child Development in State Governments will participate in the event.
  • University and College teaching faculty and students, voluntary organizations, women entrepreneurs, and business associations will also be a part of the event.

Budget Session 2022 Begins

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has said that India has once again become one of the fastest-growing economies of the world due to the relentless efforts of the Government.
  • Addressing the joint sitting of both the Houses of Parliament today, the President said:
  • India has attracted 48-billion-dollar worth of investment in the first seven months of the current financial year.
  • Country has crossed the milestone of administering more than 150 crore vaccine doses in less than a year.
  • more than 80 thousand health and wellness centers are functional and crores of Ayushman Bharat cards have helped the poor.
  • Reiterating the Government’s mantra of Antyodaya, he said, the government is giving free ration every month to all the poor under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana.
  • Talking about the success of Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana, the President said, more than two crore pucca houses have been provided to the poor under the scheme. He said Jal Jeevan Mission has started making a big difference in the lives of the people.
  • He said, agriculture exports have registered a growth of more than 25 percent in the year 2020-21. He said, more than 11 crore farmer families received one lakh 80 thousand crore rupees under the PM-KISAN scheme. He said, with this investment, big changes are visible in the agriculture sector today. He said the government has raised the age of marriage for women to 21 years to bring gender equality.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that a lot of opportunities are available for India in the present global scenario. On the first day of the Budget Session today, the Prime Minister said, the country’s economic progress, the pace of vaccination, and indigenous developed vaccines have generated trust at the global level.
  • Digital Sansad App has been launched to improve the digital footprint of the Lok Sabha and to connect people to Parliament. Lok Sabha Secretariat said Digital Sansad App will keep citizens updated on all Parliamentary proceedings and other activities.
  • The App will make it convenient for citizens to access general information about Members of Parliament, their participation in sessions, budget speeches since 1947, and proceedings from 12th Lok Sabha to 17th Lok Sabha. The App will also contain the live telecast of Sansad proceedings. Apart from a virtual tour of the Parliament, the 2022 Budget Session can also be watched live on the App.

Economic Survey 2021-22: Highlights

  • India will witness GDP growth of 8 to 8.5 percent in 2022-23, supported by widespread vaccine coverage, gains from supply-side reforms and easing of regulations, robust export growth, and availability of fiscal space to ramp up capital spending.
  • Finance Minister Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman tabled the Economic Survey 2021-22 in Parliament on Monday, which states that the year ahead is well poised for a pick-up in private sector investment with the financial system in a good position to provide support to the revival of the economy.
  • The growth projection for 2022-23 is based on the assumption that there will be no further debilitating pandemic-related economic disruption, monsoon will be normal, withdrawal of global liquidity by major central banks will be broadly orderly.
  • Referring to First Advance Estimates, the Survey states that the Indian economy is estimated to grow by 9.2 percent in real terms in 2021-22, after a contraction of 7.3 percent in 2020-21.
  • Dwelling on the sectoral aspects, the Survey states that Agriculture and allied sectors have been the least impacted by the pandemic and the sector is expected to grow by 3.9 percent in 2021-22 after growing by 3.6 percent in the previous year. In the current year, food grains production for the Kharif season is estimated to post a record level of 150.5 million tonnes.
  • According to Survey, the industrial sector went through a sharp rebound from a contraction of 7 percent in 2020-21 to an expansion of 11.8 percent in this financial year.
  • The Survey said that the services sector has been the hardest hit by the pandemic, especially segments that involve human contact.  This sector is estimated to grow by 8.2 percent this financial year following last year’s 8.4 percent contraction.
  • The Survey added that total consumption is estimated to have grown by 7.0 percent in 2021-22 with government consumption remaining the biggest contributor as in the previous year.
  • In conclusion, the Survey is quite optimistic that overall macro-economic stability indicators suggest that the Indian Economy is well placed to take on the challenges of 2022-23 and one of the reasons that the country’s economy is in good position is its unique response strategy.
  • The pre-budget Economic Survey has been tabled ahead of the Union Budget for the next financial year beginning April 1st, 2022.

Saudi Arabia Organizes First-ever Yoga Festival

  • Saudi  Arabia has organized the first-ever yoga festival on Bay La Sun Beach near Jeddah, which drew over 1,000 yoga practitioners from throughout the kingdom. The event kicked off on 29th January and will continue till 1st  February.
  • The event was organized by the Saudi Yoga Committee, which saw the participation of Saudi yoga teachers from across the Kingdom. The Saudi Yoga Committee is a government body that acts like a small federation established by the Saudi Arabia Olympic Committee, Ministry of Sports, to promote yoga in Saudi Arabia on 16th May last year.

No Plans to Deploy Combat Troops in Ukraine: NATO’s Jens Stoltenberg

  • NATO’s secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg has called for a balanced approach to rising tensions over Ukraine. He said that the alliance has no plans to deploy combat troops in the country.
  • Stoltenberg added that the situation posed a real danger and that nations should continue to work for a political solution”.
  • Russia has placed about 100,000 troops, tanks, artillery, and missiles near Ukraine’s border, but denies it plans to invade the former Soviet republic, which borders both Russia and the EU.
