5th India – Saudi Arabia Joint Committee on Defence Cooperation  

  • Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Minister of Defence for Strategic Affairs Mr Ahmed A Aseeri called on Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar in New Delhi on June 30, 2022. They discussed ways to enhance defence cooperation between the two countries.
  • The Deputy Minister briefed the Defence Secretary about the 5th meeting of India – Saudi Arabia Joint Committee on Defence Cooperation (JCDC) that was held on June 29, 2022.
  • The JCDC meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary (Armed Forces) Shri Dinesh Kumar and Mr Ahmed A Aseeri. During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the progress made in military-to-military engagements, including joint exercises, expert exchanges and industry cooperation.
  • It was agreed to hold the next meeting of JCDC in Saudi Arabia on mutually convenient dates in 2023. The JCDC is the apex body between the Defence Ministries of India and Saudi Arabia to comprehensively review & guide all aspects of bilateral defence cooperation.

NSA Ajit Doval Calls For Seamless Coordination Among Maritime Security Agencies

  • NSA Ajit Doval on Thursday called for seamless coordination among various agencies involved in protecting India’s maritime interests in the face of emerging security challenges and increasing rivalries and competitions in the Indian Ocean.
  • In his address at the first-ever meeting of the Multi Agency Maritime Security Group, Doval said there must be common protocols, standard operating procedures and operational framework among various stakeholders, noting that India will not be able to become the power it deserves to be in absence of a very strong maritime security apparatus.
  • Doval said the National Maritime Security Coordinator (NMSC) should be the focal point to bring in synergy in maritime security domain and galvanise coordination in various aspects including operational matters.
  • The government has appointed the country’s first National Maritime Security Coordinator (NMSC). Former Vice Chief of the navy, Vice Admiral Ashok Kumar, will be the NMSC in the National Security Council Secretariat under the National Security Advisor. Admiral Kumar will ensure cooperation and harmonised functioning between the various agencies and stakeholders tasked to ensure the protection of India’s vast coastline and safeguard interests in the exclusive economic zone.
  • The decision to appoint a national maritime security coordinator has been more than two decades in the making. In the aftermath of the 1999 Kargil war with Pakistan, a proposal had first been advanced to strengthen the maritime security architecture. The Mumbai terror attack in 2008 gave an impetus to the demands for the creation of a maritime security advisory board, and the appointment of a maritime security advisor—a nodal point of reference for all matters maritime.  

ABHYAS, High-speed Expendable Aerial Target, Successfully Flight-tested

  • High speed Expendable Aerial Target – was successfully flight-tested from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha on Wednesday.
    • ABHYAS is designed and developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment of DRDO. The air vehicle was launched using twin under-slung boosters which provide the initial acceleration to the vehicle. It is powered by a small gas turbine engine to sustain a long endurance flight at high subsonic speed.

The target aircraft is equipped with Micro-Electromechanical Systems-based Inertial Navigation System for navigation along with the Flight Control Computer for guidance and control along with Indigenous Radio Altimeter for very low altitude flight and Data Link for encrypted communication between the Ground Control Station and Target Aircraft. The vehicle is programmed for fully autonomous flight.

Army, DAD Synergy Conference Held, Agnipath On Key Agenda

  • The fourth Synergy Conference between the Indian Army and Defence Accounts Department was held in New Delhi on Tuesday.
  • The day-long conference was co-chaired by VCOAS Lt Gen BS Raju and Controller General of Defence Accounts Rajnish Kumar and attended by senior officers of Indian Army and DAD.
  • According to the Ministry of Defence, the primary agenda of the conference included deliberations on the Agnipath scheme and the schedule for timely implementation of a system for pay and allowances for Agniveers.
  • Other agenda items included improving the functioning of Pay and Accounts Offices (PAOs) for better service delivery to junior commissioned officers/other ranks of the Indian Army. Concrete action plans for the future were devised in consultation with senior officers of both sides.
  • The CGDA shared the vision of the department to leverage the power of technology to improve service delivery for the Armed Forces and deploy innovative business process re-engineering to fundamentally change the system of bill-processing and payments. CGDA Kumar outlined the various initiatives of DAD such as DARPAN (Defence Accounts Receipt, Payment and Analysis) and the upcoming Centralised Pay System. He also highlighted the support needed from the Army side for successful achievement of the objectives.

India Hosts Fourth Indo-Japan Cyber Dialogue, Reviews Progress In Cyber Security

  • India virtually hosted the fourth India-Japan Cyber Dialogue on Thursday as both sides discussed areas of bilateral cyber cooperation and reviewed the progress achieved in the areas of cybersecurity. The talks also discussed Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) including the 5G technology.
  • Both sides exchanged views on latest developments in the cyber domain and mutual cooperation during cyber consultations at the United Nations and other multilateral and regional fora,” MEA statement.
  • “Both sides discussed important areas of bilateral cyber cooperation and reviewed the progress achieved in the areas of cybersecurity and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) including 5G Technology. Both sides exchanged views on latest developments in the cyber domain and mutual cooperation during cyber consultations at the United Nations and other multilateral and regional fora,” MEA statement said.
  • Both sides agreed to hold the next India-Japan Cyber Dialogue in 2023 as per mutual convenience.

Lt Gen S Harimohan Iyer Took Over As Commandant of School Of Artillery

  • Lt Gen S Harimohan Iyer took over as Commandant of School of Artillery, Deolali from Lt Gen Raj Kumar Sharma. On assuming the command, Lt Gen S Harimohan Iyer reaffirmed the resolve of Gunners to train hard and prepare for future challenges.
  • The School of Artillery was established for the Indian Army at Kakul, now in Pakistan in April 1918. It moved to Devlali in June 1941. The Anti-Aircraft School at Karachi was also moved to Devlali and merged with the School of Artillery as one of its Wings in 1947.

RAdm J Singh Took Over As Chief of Staff Southern Naval Command

  • RAdm J Singh took over as Chief of Staff Southern Naval Command, 30 Jun 22.
  • An Anti Submarine Warfare specialist, he has commanded Missile Corvette INS Kulish & Destroyer INS Ranvir. Prior to this, he held appointment of Asst Chief of Naval Staff (Foreign Cooperation & Intelligence).
  • The Southern Naval Command is one of the three command-level formations of the Indian Navy. It has its headquarters in Kochi, Kerala at INS Venduruthy. It is the Training Command of the Indian Navy.
