Global Space Science And Technology: India

  • Union  Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh said, several initiatives are taken to make India the global leader in space science and technology.
  • Technology development projects are going on in ISRO centers spanning the areas of scientific instrumentation, communication, navigation, remote sensing, etc. Moreover, Disruptive technologies based on a quantum mechanical principle which includes satellite-based quantum communication, quantum radar have been initiated.
  • Initiatives have been taken for the exploration of space weather, the sun, the moon, and the other planets as well as astronomical sources. He said a decadal plan is under preparation covering scientific and technological development for future space missions.
  • On the issue of ISRO’s plan to develop an Indian Space Telescope, Dr. Jitendra Singh informed that ISRO has already realized X-ray and Visible/ Ultraviolet telescope. In the coming years, ISRO has plans to develop space telescopes dedicated to UV and visible/IR astronomy. The planned UV telescope will be made up of a 1-meter mirror and will provide the deepest images in UV.
  • Department of Space is revising the existing policies to facilitate private sector participation in Space activities.
  •  New policy framework is being drafted to address various space sectors such as SpaceCom, Remote Sensing, Technology Transfer, Navigation, Space Transportation, Space exploration, and Space Situational Awareness. 
  • He said, in the Startup India portal, around 75 start-ups are shown under the space technology category.

Nuclear Energy Generation Since 2014

  • Dr. Jitendra Singh today said, the share of nuclear energy in the total electricity generation in the country has remained around 3 to 3.5% since 2014.
  • In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Dr. Jitendra Singh, however, informed that the actual commercial generation has increased from 34162 Million Units in the calendar year 2014 to 43918 Million Units in the calendar year 2021.
  • The Minister said, the share of nuclear power in total electricity generation depends on the generation by nuclear power units and that by all electricity-generating technologies. The share of nuclear power in the total electricity generation is planned to be increased by adding more nuclear power capacity in the country.
  • Dr. Jitendra Singh said India is pursuing an indigenous three-stage nuclear power program to provide the country with long-term energy security in a sustainable manner. In addition, Light Water Reactors based on foreign cooperation are also being set up as additionalities. An expansion program for nuclear power is being undertaken to provide the country with clean electricity.

Target Of 1.2-Billion-ton Coal Production By 2023-24

  • A target of all India coal production of 1.2 Billion Tons up to the year 2023-24 has been fixed.
  • Steps Taken:
  • Commercial Auction of coal on revenue share mechanism: 28 coal mines have been successfully auctioned
  • Allowed sale of excess coal production: allowing the sale of coal or lignite, on payment of the additional amount, by the lessee of a captive mine up to 50 percent of the total coal or lignite produced in a financial year, after meeting the requirement of the end-use plant linked with the mine.
  • Rolling auction: To expedite the process for conducting an auction and to carry out more rounds of the auction in a year, a mechanism of rolling auctions of coal mines has been planned.
  • Single Window Clearance: The Union government has launched the Single Window Clearance portal on 11.01.2021 for the coal sector to speed up the operationalization of coal mines.

Growth Rate Of Core Sector

  • The growth rate of Core Sector in the country increased by 3.4% (provisional) in November 2021 compared to November 2020. Overall growth rate of core sector for April-Dec 2021 is 12.6%.
  • The Core Sector comprise 40.27% of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), thus, it has an impact on the Index of Industrial Production.
  • Government has undertaken a number of measures to boost industrial infrastructure.  PM Gati Shakti, a National Master Plan has been launched for multi-modal connectivity, bringing 16 Ministries including Railways and Roadways together for integrated planning and coordinated implementation of infrastructure connectivity projects.  Additionally, other measures adopted include National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP), National Monetization Pipeline (NMP), India Industrial Land Bank (IILB), Industrial Park Rating System (IPRS), soft launch of the National Single Window System (NSWS).  Besides, measures taken to promote industrial sector include announcement of Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for 14 Key Sectors, introduction of Goods and Services Tax, reduction in Corporate tax rates to 15%, enactment of four labour codes, improving ease of doing business, efforts to reduce compliance burden, FDI policy reforms, policy measures to boost domestic manufacturing through public procurement orders, Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP), etc.
  • In Union Budget 2022-23, financial outlay of Rs. 7.50 lakh crore has been allocated for capital expenditure by the Central government, which is 35.4% higher as compared to allocation in previous year. Total effective capital expenditure for 2022-23 is Rs. 10.68 lakh crore i.e., nearly 4.1% of GDP.
  • Economic Survey 2021-22 also estimated India’s GDP to grow by 9.2 per cent in 2021-22.  Manufacturing is estimated to grow by 12.5 per cent in 2021-22.

My Vote Is My Future- Power Of One Vote

  • The Election Commission has come up with an initiative aimed at making the country’s electoral process more participative through creative expression. It had launched a National Voters Awareness contest –  My Vote is My Future- Power of One Vote. The contest includes Quiz Contest, Slogan Contest, Song Contest, Video Making Contest, and Poster Design Contest which are open to all age groups. The initiative was launched on the occasion of National Voters Day on 25th of January this year. Entries for the contest can be sent in till 15th March, 2022. The winners will be suitably awarded cash prizes and merchandise.
  • The contest will have questions related to the basic and important information relevant to all categories of voters, Electoral roll, Electronic Voting Machine and VVPAT, Election Law and History of Elections in India.

FASTags Issued Till Jan 2022

  • Over four crore 59 lakh FASTags have been issued in the country till the end of last month. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said, 148 percent growth has been registered in the user fee collection through FASTag on national highways during the last two years.
  • He said, over ten thousand 728 crore rupees as a user fee have been collected in the year 2019-20.
  • He added, over 26 thousand 622 crore rupees have been collected so far as a user fee during this financial year. The Minister said, over 12 lakh refund cases have been facilitated to FASTag users for incorrect deductions since January 2020.

Swatantrata Samman Sainik Yojana (SSSY)

  • The government today said at present 5,625 freedom fighters are receiving monthly Samman pension under the Swatantrata Samman Sainik Yojana (SSSY). In a written reply in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Ajay Kumar Mishra said, the monthly Samman pension and other facilities are provided to the eligible dependents of late freedom fighter pensioners under SSSY.
  • He said, the government is taking steps to preserve the memories of freedom fighters including conservation of plan of cellular jail, raising of martyr’s column. Besides setting up galleries displaying the photographs and write-ups supported with archival documents and erecting of eternal flames called Swantantrya Jyot in memory of the sacrifices of heroes of the freedom struggle.
  • Government of India introduced the ‘Ex-Andaman Political Prisoners Pension Scheme’ in 1969 to honour the freedom fighters who had been incarcerated in the Cellular Jail at Port Blair.
  • In 1972, to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Independence, a regular scheme for grant of freedom fighters’ pension was introduced.
  • Since 1980, a liberalized scheme, namely the ‘Swatantrata Sainik Samman Pension Scheme, 1980’ is being implemented.
  • From the financial year 2017-18 onwards, the nomenclature of the Scheme has been changed as ‘Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana’.
