World Pulses Day

  • Legumes or pulses are seeds cultivated out of leguminous plants for food. Beans, peas, and lentils are the most common and most consumed types of pulses.
  • Pulses are consumed in various other forms across the world.
  • February 10 is observed as World Pulses Day every year and is being celebrated by the United Nations since 2009.
  • The United Nations learned the importance of crops in the year 2013. In 2016, they declared that year to be the International Year of pulses through their resolution.
  • Then in 2019, they decided to dedicate the day to pulses to increase awareness and globally access pulses to World Pulses Day.
  • The UN also hopes to double the cultivation of pulses by the year 2050.
  • According to the UN, the theme of World Pulses Day 2022 will be – ‘Pulses to empower youth in achieving sustainable agri-food systems.’
  • The program will focus on testimonies and perspectives or youth organizations’ representatives. As per the UN, pulses contribute to creating livelihood opportunities and equity which are essential for sustainable agri-food systems. Pulses also employ women from the rural areas and the youth in farming as well as the manufacturing sectors.

White Cheeked Macaque

  • Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have found a new mammal species in the country — the White Cheeked Macaque (Macaca leucogenys).
  • While the species was first discovered in China in 2015, its existence was not known in India before this.
  • It is only now that Indian scientists have discovered its presence in the remote Anjaw district in central Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The latest discovery takes India’s mammal count from 437 to 438.
  • This species is not covered by the Wildlife Protection Act of India, because till now it is not known that the species existed in India.

Unitary Digital Identity Framework

  • India has agreed to provide a grant to Sri Lanka to implement a ‘Unitary Digital Identity framework’, apparently modelled on the Aadhaar card. The government of Sri Lanka has decided to speed up the implementation of a Unitary Digital Identity framework in the country.
  • The personal identity verification program is a digital tool that can represent the identities of individuals in cyberspace, and the identification of individual identities that can be accurately verified in digital and physical environments by combining the two devices.
  • The government of India had previously agreed to provide a grant to implement the Unitary Digital Identity framework, after bilateral talks between the Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019.

Carbon Capture & Utilization

  • Two National Centres of Excellence in Carbon Capture and Utilization are being established in India. These Centres are being set up at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bengaluru. These are being set up with support from the Department of Science & Technology.
  • The Ministry of Science and Technology has said that these Centres will act as multi-disciplinary, long-term research, design development, collaborative, and capacity-building hubs for state-of-the-art research and application-oriented initiatives in the field of Carbon Capture and Utilization. 
  • The ministry said that the Centres will help bring together the country’s collective strength and assist in the development of an appropriate and feasible R&D and innovation roadmap. It added that the Centres will also keep watch on international trends and suggest possible collaborative endeavors.

Mandatory Rules Issued For Vehicle Manufacturers

  • Government has made it mandatory for vehicle manufacturers to fit six airbags and three points of the seat belt in vehicles including the driver. The absence of airbags for the passengers puts the occupant at high risk in case of a severe accident.
  • Addressing a press conference in New Delhi today, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that due to the death of people in road accidents, there is a loss of 3.1 percent of the country’s GDP.
  • He said the government is working on many aspects including technical improvements in vehicles, amendments in policies, and awareness in people to reduce road accident cases.
  • The Minister said, Under the Bharat N Cap program,  to improve upon the safety of the vehicle, star rating will be provided to vehicles based on the standards and protocol.

Projects & Works: Ministry of Civil Aviation

  • Seven AAI airports namely Chennai, Kolkata, Goa, Pune, Patna, Bhubaneswar & Chandigarh that participated in ACI-ASQ survey in 2021, have been chosen for Voice of Customer Recognition under Airports Council International (ACI) World’s Voice of the Customer initiative.
  • Airports Council International has initiated the ‘Voice of the Customer’ initiative to acknowledge and recognize airports that continued to prioritize their customers and are committed to ensuring their voice was heard, even during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Airport Service Quality (ASQ) survey is the world-renowned and internationally established global benchmarking programme measuring passenger’s satisfaction, whilst they travel through an airport, conducted by the Airports Council International (ACI). ASQ Awards recognize those airports around the world that deliver the best customer experience in the opinion of their own passengers. The ASQ programme provides the research tool and management information to better understand passengers’ views and what they want from an airport from the products and services standpoint.
  • Krishi Udan Scheme 2.0 was announced on 27 October 2021 enhancing the existing provisions, mainly focusing on transporting perishable food products from the hilly areas, North-Eastern States and tribal areas.  For facilitating and incentivizing movement of agri-produce by air transportation Airports Authority of India (AAI) provides full waiver of Landing, Parking, Terminal Navigational Landing Charges (TNLC) and Route Navigation Facility Charges (RNFC) for Indian freighters and P2C (Passenger-to-Cargo) Aircrafts primarily around 25 airports focusing on Northeastern, Hilly and Tribal region and 28 airports in other regions/areas.
  • 29 States are covered under the Krishi Udan 2.0 Scheme.
  • Upgradation/Modernisation of airports is a continuous process and is undertaken by Airports Authority of India (AAI) and other Airport Developers from time to time depending on the availability of land, commercial viability, socio-economic considerations, traffic demand/ willingness of airlines to operate to/from such airports. AAI and other Airport Developers have targeted capital outlay of approximately Rs. 91000 crore in airport sector in the next five years for expansion and modification of existing terminals, new terminals and strengthening of runways, among other activities.
  • Under the Greenfield Airports Policy-2008, Government of India has so far accorded ‘in-principle’ approval for setting up of 21 Greenfield Airports across the country namely Mopa in Goa, Navi Mumbai, Shirdi and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, Kalaburagi, Bijapur, Hassan and Shimoga in Karnataka, Datia (Gwalior) in Madhya Pradesh, Kushinagar and Noida (Jewar) in Uttar Pradesh, Dholera and Hirasar in Gujarat, Karaikal in Puducherry, Dagadarthi, Bhogapuram and Oravakal in Andhra Pradesh, Durgapur in West Bengal, Pakyong in Sikkim, Kannur in Kerala and Hollongi (Itanagar) in Arunachal Pradesh. Out of these, eight airports  namely Durgapur, Shirdi, Sindhudurg, Pakyong, Kannur, Kalaburagi, Oravakal and Kushinagar have been operationalized.

Global Webinar On Monuments Protection

  • To create a global awareness on the preservation of monuments and heritage, National Monuments Authority has organized a Webinar in collaboration with ICCR (MEA) on “Protection of the Monuments and their significance for the Preservation of National Heritage” on 11th February, 2022, the memorial day of Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay.
  • About 20 countries have confirmed their participation that includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, Japan, Iran, South Africa, Venezuela, Israel and USA.
  • This is the first ever global Webinar on monuments protection and has been scheduled on the memorial day of Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay. A large number of scholars/diplomats has agreed to speak on the importance of protecting the national monuments and heritage sites and carry forward the memory of the people of the land etched on the monuments.
