Finland Moves Toward Joining NATO Amid Russian Threats

  • Finland’s leaders came out in favor of applying to join NATO, and Sweden could do the same within days, in a historic realignment on the continent 2 1/2 months after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine sent a shiver of fear through Moscow’s neighbors.
  • Finland’s president and the prime minister announced that the Nordic country should apply right away for membership in NATO, the military defense pact founded in part to counter the Soviet Union. Sweden, likewise, is considering putting itself under NATO’s protection.
  • That would represent a major change in Europe’s security landscape: Sweden has avoided military alliances for more than 200 years, while Finland adopted neutrality after its defeat by the Soviets in World War II.
  • What is NATO?
  • North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a military alliance established by the North Atlantic Treaty (also called the Washington Treaty) of April 1949, by the United States, Canada, and several Western European nations to provide collective security against the Soviet Union.
  • There are currently 30 member states.
  • Its original members were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
  • Joining the original signatories were Greece and Turkey (1952), West Germany (1955, from 1990 as Germany), Spain (1982), the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland (1999), Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia (2004), Albania and Croatia (2009), Montenegro (2017), and North Macedonia (2020).
  • France withdrew from the integrated military command of NATO in 1966 but remained a member of the organization, it resumed its position in NATO’s military command in 2009.
  • Headquarters: Brussels, Belgium.
  • Headquarters of Allied Command Operations: Mons, Belgium.

ISRO Successfully Tests Human-rated HS200 Solid Rocket Booster For Gaganyaan Mission

  • ISRO on Friday went a step ahead in its human space mission programme ‘Gaganyaan’ by successfully completing the static test firing of the solid fuel-powered rocket booster engine.
  • ISRO said, “HS200 rocket booster is the human-rated version of the well-proven S200 rocket booster of GSLV Mk III satellite launch vehicle. This full-duration test of the first stage booster engine is part of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle MkIII (GSLV Mk III) rocket that would carry Indian astronauts to space.
  • The test was conducted at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh
  • The first stage is powered by solid fuel, the second by liquid fuel and the third is the cryogenic stage powered by liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen.

About:

  • Gaganyaan is a mission by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
  • Under the Gaganyaan schedule:
  • Three flights will be sent into orbit.
  • There will be two unmanned flights and one human spaceflight.
  • The Gaganyaan system module, called the Orbital Module will have three Indian astronauts, including a woman.
  • It will circle Earth at a low-earth-orbit at an altitude of 300-400 km from earth for 5-7 days.

Indian ‘Military Base’ In Agalega

  • India is building military infrastructure on Mauritius’ Agalega Island to increase its presence in the western Indian Ocean. Over the last few years, a 10,000-foot runway and a jetty have been constructed on the island, which is located over 1,100 km north of the main island of Mauritius.
  • This development confirms what maritime security experts have long suspected — India plans to deploy its P-8I long-range surveillance aircraft on the island.
  • India’s maritime security strategy lists the south-west Indian Ocean, including the Mozambique Channel (used by shipping transiting the Cape of Good Hope) and the east coast of Africa, where China has been investing heavily, as one of the primary areas of interest.

Rajnath Singh To Launch Two Indigenously Built Frontline Warships

  • A statement from the Indian Navy said the nation would witness a landmark event in the history of indigenous warship building when Surat, a Project 15B destroyer, and Udaygiri, a Project 17A frigate, would be launched.
  • The Project 15B class of ships are the next-generation stealth, guided-missile destroyers of the Navy being built at Mazagon Docks. Surat is the fourth of Project 15B destroyers.
  • It heralds a significant makeover of the P15A (Kolkata Class) destroyers and is named after the commercial capital of Gujarat and also the second-largest commercial hub of western India, after Mumbai.
  • Udaygiri, named after a mountain range in Andhra Pradesh, is the third of Project 17A frigates. They have improved stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors, and platform management systems. Udaygiri is the reincarnation of the erstwhile Udaygiri, the Leander Class ASW frigate, which saw numerous challenging operations in its illustrious service to the country spanning over three decades from February 18, 1976, to August 24, 2007. Under the P17A programme, a total of seven ships are under construction–four at Mazagon Docks and three at Kolkata’s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers.
  • The first two ships of the P17A Project were launched in 2019 and 2020 at Mazagon Docks and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers respectively.
  • Both 15B and P17A ships have been designed in-house by the Directorate of Naval Design, the fountainhead for all warship design activities in India, and during their building phase at the shipyard, around 75 percent of the equipment and systems were sourced from indigenous firms including micro, small and medium enterprises, the statement added.

Indian Army Explores Quadcopters For Surveillance

  • India’s MoD released an RFI on 4 May to identify vendors who can deliver high-altitude surveillance quadcopters to the Indian Army. More than 500 systems are expected to be purchased.
  • The RFI calls for a mission radius of at least 5km, and two versions are envisaged – one for deployment above and the other below 4,000m. The RFI says the quadcopter should not weigh more than 10kg but that the ‘weight of the equipment should be suitable to withstand strong high-altitude winds up to 20 knots.
  • Furthermore, the surveillance quadcopter must be capable of being launched at altitudes above 5,500m.
