Sarojini Naidu Remembered On Her Jayanti
- The Nation is remembering freedom fighter, orator, and eminent poet Sarojini Naidu (13 February 1879 – 2 March 1949) on her 143rd birth anniversary today. She was a proponent of civil rights, women’s emancipation, and anti-imperialistic ideas. Sarojini Naidu was the second women President of the Indian National Congress and the first Indian woman to preside at the INC conference.
- She participated in the non-cooperation movement and Quit India movement.
- After independence, Sarojini Naidu was appointed as the Governor of the United Provinces which is present-day Uttar Pradesh, making her India’s first woman governor. Naidu’s work as a poet earned her the sobriquet The Nightingale of India or Bharat Kokila.
ISRO Successfully Launches EOS-04
- ISRO successfully launches earth observation satellite EOS-04 along with two other satellites; Prime Minister congratulates Indian space scientists.
- India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C52 successfully injected Earth Observation Satellite EOS-04, into an intended sun-synchronous polar orbit of 529 km altitude at 06:17 hours IST today from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR, Sriharikota.
- PSLV lifted off at 05:59 hours IST from the first launch pad at SHAR. This was the 54th flight of PSLV; and the 23rd flight of PSLV in XL configuration with six strap-on motors.
- The satellite EOS-04 is a Radar Imaging Satellite designed to provide high-quality images under all weather conditions for applications such as Agriculture, Forestry & Plantations, Soil Moisture & Hydrology, and Flood mapping. Weighing about 1710 kg, it generates 2280 W power and has a mission life of 10 years.
- PSLV C52 also placed two small satellites today. One of them is a student satellite INSPIREsat-1 developed by the Indian Institute of Space Science & Technology in association with the Laboratory of Atmospheric & Space Physics at the University of Colorado. Another is a technology demonstrator satellite INS-2TD from ISRO, which is a precursor to India-Bhutan Joint Satellite INS-2B.
- Co-passenger satellites were successfully separated from the PSLV in a predetermined sequence. ISRO Chairperson S Somanath congratulated team ISRO for the precision with which the mission was accomplished.

Reimagining Museums In India
- Culture Ministry is organising a first of its kind, two days Global Summit on ‘Reimagining Museums in India’ in Hyderabad on 15 to 16 of this month. The Summit will be inaugurated by Culture, Tourism and Development of Northeastern Region Minister G. Kishan Reddy.
- The Ministry said that participants from countries such as India, Australia, France, Italy, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom will be a part of the summit. It said, the summit will be held online over two days and participation is open to the public. The Ministry said approximately 2 thousand 300 people have already registered to attend the event.
- Speaking about the Summit, Mr. Reddy said, over the last seven years there has been a renewed focus to construct new museums with engaging exhibits and content, leveraging modern technologies such as digital, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. He said, government has also invested significantly in upgrading existing museums so that they continue to be relevant to the new generation.
- The summit is being organized under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the flagship program to mark 75th anniversary of India’s independence and celebrate the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements.
India And Japan Celebrates 70th Year Of Diplomatic Relations
- A Joint Meeting was held between India and Japan for annual review of progress under Japanese Industrial Townships (JITs) in India.
- It was held between India’s (Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade (DPIIT) and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry During the meeting, DPIIT and the States presented the developed land and infrastructure readily available for Japanese investors in these townships. Japanese companies were invited for field visits to the JITs to attract investments.
- It was highlighted that India has announced various schemes to attract investments and improve ease of doing business in India. Opportunities for investments in Information and Communication Technologies, Renewable Energy, Electric Vehicles,
- Drones, Robotics and Textiles sectors were also showcased.
- Japan side highlighted the importance of India and Japan’s partnership that will further expand through the “Memorandum of Cooperation on India – Japan Industrial Competitiveness Partnership” and the ongoing Supply Chain Resilience Initiative.
- Japan Industrial Townships were set up pursuant to the “Action Agenda for the India-Japan Investment and Trade Promotion and Asia-Pacific Economic Integration” signed between Japan and India in 2015 to facilitate Japanese investment to India. Currently there are 114 Japanese companies across the JITs.
- Japan is the only country that has dedicated country-focused industrial townships across India. These Japanese Industrial Townships offer facilities such as, special Japan desks for translation and facilitation support, world class infrastructure facilities, plug and play facilities, residential clusters, and special incentives for Japanese companies.
- It is also worth noting that this year marks the 70th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Japan. The two countries had established diplomatic relations in April 1952.
Export Of Shallots
- Shallots (Allium ascalonicum) is a member of the allium family, closely related to onions, garlic, and chives.
- Export of Shallots has seen a boom with a growth of 487 percent since 2013. Exports rose from 2 Million dollars in April-December 2013 to 11.6 million in April-December 2021. Major export destinations during April-December 2021 were Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, UAE, and Singapore.
- Union Minister Piyush Goyal said in a series of tweets that India’s export of Pineapple also rose by almost 100 percent to 3.26 million during April-December 2021 compared to 1.63 Million during April-December 2013. Major export destinations for Pineapple during April-December 2021 were UAE, Nepal, Qatar, Maldives, and US.
Grant Of Rs. 1154.90 Crore Released To States For ULBs
- The Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance today released an amount of Rs. 1154.90 crore to 4 States for providing grants to Urban Local Bodies. The States to which grants were released on Monday are Andhra Pradesh (Rs. 225.60 crore), Bihar (Rs. 769 crore), Gujarat (Rs. 165.30 crore) and Sikkim (Rs.5 crore). The grants released are meant for Non-Million Plus cities (NMPCs) including Cantonment Boards.
- The 15th Finance Commission in its report for the period from 2021-22 to 2025-26 has divided the Urban Local Bodies into two categories: (a) Million-Plus urban agglomerations/cities (excluding Delhi and Srinagar), and (b) all other cities and towns with less than one million population (Non-Million Plus cities). The 15th FC has recommended separate grants for them. Out of the total grants recommended by the Commission for Non-Million Plus cities, 40% is basic (untied) grant and the remaining 60% is tied grant. Basic grants (untied) are utilised for location specific felt needs, except for payment of salary and incurring other establishment expenditure.
- On the other hand, tied grants for the Non-Million Plus cities are released for supporting and strengthening the delivery of basic services. Out of the total tied grant, 50% is earmarked for ‘Sanitation Solid Waste Management and attainment of star ratings as developed by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MOH&UA). The remaining 50% is tied to ‘Drinking water, rainwater harvesting and water recycling’.
