4th India – Australia Energy Dialogue

  • The 4th India – Australia Energy Dialogue was held on 15th February 2022. The dialogue was co-chaired by Hon’ble Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Mr. R.K. Singh from the Indian side and Hon’ble Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, Mr. Angus Taylor from the Australian side.
  • Energy Transition was a major area of discussion in the dialogue and both the Energy Ministers spoke in detail about the ongoing Energy Transition activities in their respective countries with focus on renewables, energy efficiency, storage, EVs, critical minerals, mining etc. The need of Climate Finance was also highlighted by India for meeting the Energy Transition goals of developing countries.
  • A Letter of Intent between India and Australia on New and Renewable Energy Technology was signed during the Dialogue. This LoI will pave the way for working towards reducing the cost of new and renewable energy technologies and scaling up deployment in order to accelerate global emissions reduction. The focus of this LoI will be scaling up manufacture and deployment of ultra low-cost solar and clean hydrogen.
  • Apart from the power sector, there are many desirable areas of cooperation agreed under the other JWGs like reducing costs of Green Hydrogen; cooperation in sphere of coal-based energy security and resource deployment; investment opportunities in the minerals sector; exploring potential for an LNG Partnership, among other areas.

Cabinet Approves India’s G20 Presidency

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, today approved the setting up of a G20 Secretariat and its reporting structures, which will be responsible for implementation of overall policy decisions and arrangements needed for steering India’s forthcoming G20 Presidency.
  • India will hold the Presidency of the G20 from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023, culminating with the G20 Summit in India in 2023. G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation that plays an important role in global economic governance.
  • As per practice, a G20 Secretariat is being established to handle work relating to substantive / knowledge / content, technical, media, security and logistical aspects of India’s G20 Presidency. It will be manned by officers and staff from the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Finance, and other relevant line Ministries / Departments and domain knowledge experts. The Secretariat will be functional till February 2024.
  • The Secretariat will be guided by an Apex Committee headed by Prime Minister, and comprising Finance Minister, Home Minister, External Affairs Minister, and G20 Sherpa (Commerce & Industry, Textiles, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister), to provide overall guidance to India’s G20 Presidency. Further, a Coordination Committee will also be set up to oversee all G20 preparations and report to the Apex Committee.  The G20 Secretariat will enable long term capacity building, including knowledge and expertise, for India’s leadership on global issues in multilateral fora.

World Sustainable Development Summit: TERI

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will deliver the inaugural address at The Energy and Resources Institute’s (TERI) World Sustainable Development Summit  Today.
  • World Sustainable Development Summit is TERI’s annual flagship event. The theme for this year’s Summit is ‘Towards a Resilient Planet: Ensuring a Sustainable and Equitable Future. The Summit will discuss a wide range of issues including climate change, sustainable production, energy transitions, global commons, and resource security.
  • The three-day summit starting 16th February will be attended by Mr. Luis  Abinader, President of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Ms. Amina J Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations, heads of various intergovernmental organizations, Ministers/ Envoys from more than a dozen countries and delegates from over 120 countries.

Guru Ravidas Jayanthi Celebrated

  • Ravidas, or Raidas, was an Indian mystic poet-saint of the bhakti movement and founder of the Ravidassia religion during the 15th to 16th century CE. Venerated as a guru (teacher) in the modern regions of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, he was a poet, social reformer, and spiritual figure.
  • The life details of Ravidas are uncertain and contested. Scholars believe he was born in 1450 CE.
  • Ravidas’s devotional Verses were included in the Sikh scriptures known as Guru Granth Sahib. The Panch Vani text of the Dadupanthi tradition within Hinduism also includes numerous poems of Ravidas. He taught the removal of social divisions of caste and gender and promoted unity in the pursuit of personal spiritual freedom.

Indian Embassy Asks Indian To Leave Ukraine

  • Indian Embassy in Kyiv has asked Indians particularly students whose stay is not essential, to leave Ukraine temporarily in view of the current situation.  Indian nationals are also advised to avoid all non-essential travel to and within Ukraine.
  • The Embassy has asked all Indian nationals to keep it informed about the status of their presence in Ukraine to enable the Embassy to reach them where required. The Embassy continues to function normally to provide all services to Indian nationals in Ukraine.
  • The US and the United Kingdom have asked citizens to leave Ukraine at the earliest. Russia and Belarus have been conducting a military exercise in the north of Ukraine.
  • However, the Kremlin signaled it is ready to keep talking with the West about security grievances that led to the current Ukraine crisis, offering hope that Russia might not invade its beleaguered neighbor within days as the U.S. and European allies increasingly fear.

Darkathon -2022

  • Narcotics Control Bureau, NCB, is organising in New Delhi today the Darkathon -2022 to find solutions to counter drug trafficking through darknet across the globe. The initiative aims at involving students, youth and technical experts to find effective solutions to unravel the anonymity of darknet markets.
  • Speaking after inaugurating the Darkathon, Director-General NCB SN Pradhan said, this hackathon is a continuation of the Vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who recognised the financial challenges being posed by drug trafficking during a comprehensive review of NCB and directed to find solutions to this menace.
  • This hackathon is being organised in three phases starting today and concluding on 22nd April. The registration for the Darkathon will start from today and will close on 31st next month.
  • The grand finale is scheduled on 22nd April followed by an award ceremony. Registration for the hackathon can be done at http://ncb.cyberchallenge.in
  • The winner of Darkathon will be awarded with cash of worth 2.5 Lakh rupees. First Runner-up will receive 2 lakh rupees while third runner-up will be given 1.5 lakh rupees.

Medaram Jathara 2022

  • Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs has sanctioned 2.26 crore rupees for various activities about the festival of Medaram Jathara 2022. The Medaram Jathara is the second-largest fair of India, after the Kumbh Mela, celebrated by the second-largest Tribal Community of Telangana – the Koya tribe for four days. This year it is being celebrated from Wednesday till 19th of this month.
  • Under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Government has announced that tribal culture and heritage will be the cynosure of 2022. This Jathara is conducted in honor of the Goddesses Sammakka and Saralamma. It is celebrated once in two years in February.
  • The Ministry’s continuous support of this festival aims to generate awareness and a harmonious bond between the visitors and the Tribal communities of Telangana.
