International Mother Language Day

  • The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) celebrates 21st February as International Mother Language Day to promote mother tongue-based multilingual education.
  • The theme of 2022 is: “Using technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and opportunities”, it focuses on the potential role of technology to advance multilingual education and support the development of quality teaching and learning for all.
  • The world has over 7,000 languages whereas India alone has about 22 officially recognized languages, 1635 mother tongues, and 234 identifiable mother tongues.
  • UNESCO declared 21st February as International Mother Language Day in 1999 and the World has been celebrating the same since 2000.

Shivaji Jayanti 2022

  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is celebrated each year on 19th February to remember and praise his courage, warfare tactics and administrative skills.
  • He carved an enclave from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Kingdom.
  • In 1870, social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule initiated the celebration Shiv Jayanti in Pune which is now known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti.

Statehood Day Of Mizoram & Arunachal Pradesh

  • The formalization of Mizoram State took place on 20th February 1987 after the 53rd Amendment of the Indian Constitution, 1986.
  • The Mizo hills area became the Lushai Hills district within Assam at the time of independence. Further, in 1954 it was renamed the Mizo Hills District of Assam.
  • Mizoram was granted the status of a Union Territory in 1972 after signing an accord with the moderates of the Mizo National Front (MNF).
  • The Union Territory of Mizoram was conferred the status of a full state in 1986 after signing of a memorandum of settlement (Mizoram Peace Accord) between the Central government and the MNF.
  • Through the 55th amendment to the Indian Constitution in 1986, Arunachal Pradesh became the 24th state of the Indian Union on 20th February 1987.
  • During the British Colonial Rule, until 1972, the state was named as the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA).
  • On 20th January 1972, it became a Union Territory and was named Arunachal Pradesh. It was granted statehood by the State of Arunachal Pradesh Act, 1986.

“Most Dependable Public Sector In India” Award

  • Union Minister of Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs Shri Pralhad Joshi  complimented Coal India Ltd (CIL) under the Ministry of Coal,  for getting the “Most Dependable Public Sector in India “ award. In a tweet,  Minister Shri Joshi  expressed happiness and said that the award will provide further fillip to the efforts of CIL to become  the global leader in the energy sector. Minister of state for Coal, Mines and Railways Shri Raosaheb Patil Danve also complimented CIL for bagging the coveted award.
  • The Award was conferred on CIL by the Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry, Kolkatta in “Energy Meet &Excellence Awards function.

25th Meeting Of FSDC

  • The 25th meeting of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) was held in Mumbai, under the Chairpersonship of Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman.
  • The Finance Minister is on a two-day post-Budget outreach visit to the city, where she is meeting with representatives of industry, financial market functionaries and bankers.
  • The Council deliberated on the various mandates of the FSDC and major macro-financial challenges arising in view of global and domestic developments.
  • The Council noted that Government and all regulators need to maintain constant vigil on the financial conditions and functioning of important financial institutions, especially considering that it could expose financial vulnerabilities in the medium and long-term.
  • The Council discussed measures required for further development of the financial sector and to achieve an inclusive economic growth with macroeconomic stability.
  • The Financial Stability and Development Council has been set up by the government in consultation with financial market regulators, to strengthen and institutionalize the mechanism for maintaining financial stability, enhance inter-regulatory coordination and promote financial sector development.
  • Without prejudice to the autonomy of regulators, the Council monitors macro-prudential supervision of the economy, including functioning of large financial conglomerates, and addresses inter-regulatory coordination and financial sector development issues.
  • It also focuses on financial literacy and financial inclusion.

Vigyan Sarvatra Pujyate

  • As part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a week-long commemoration event titled Vigyan Sarvatra Pujyate was launched today. The event which will continue till 28th of February was inaugurated digitally by Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh and Union Minister of Culture G Kishan Reddy at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The event is being held simultaneously at 75 locations across the country. The week-long event will display the country’s scientific legacy and technology prowess that has helped find solutions to defence, space, health, agriculture, astronomy, and other sectors. The event is being held in various Indian languages, including Kashmiri, Dogri, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telegu, Odia, Bengali, Assamese, Nepali, Maithili, and Manipur, and will include the screening of 75 films.
  • Speaking on the occasion, Science and Technology Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said, in the last seven years, the Narendra Modi government has taken several steps to promote science and innovations in the country. He said, the penetration of science and technology is being seen in every sector as it is the basis of development. Dr. Singh said, science has become an important tool for bringing ease of living in people’s life and meeting future challenges.
  • Minister of Culture G Kishan Reddy thanked the scientists across the world for their important contributions in dealing with challenges posed by Covid-19 pandemic effectively. He said, they have worked with full commitment and dedication to develop Covid-19  vaccines to save people’s lives. He also stressed the need to develop a scientific temper among the children. 
  • Principal Scientific Advisor, Dr K Vijay Raghavan, and Secretary, Department of Science and Technology Dr S Chandrasekhar also shared their view on the occasion.

Rural Connectivity GIS Data In Public Domain

  • Union Minister Giriraj released Rural Connectivity Geographic Information System Data in the public domain. He said, GIS technology will be utilized for improvement in the planning and implementation of projects in rural areas.
  • Mr. Singh said, data will contribute immensely to the making of New India. He said, data has been collected and digitized using GIS platform developed for Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. He added that GIS data for eight lakh rural facilities, 10 lakh habitations, and 25 lakh kilometers of rural roads have been collected and digitized using GIS platform developed for the scheme. He further said, Gati Shakti is a national master plan and digital platform to plan and execute infrastructure projects in the country to reduce logistics costs and enhance infrastructure.
