United Nations Public Service Day
- The United Nations Public Service Day is celebrated on June 23 of every year.
- The UN Public Service Day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly’s resolution of 2003, to “celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community”.
- The United Nations Economic and Social Council established that the United Nations Public Service Awards be bestowed on Public Service Day for contributions made to the cause of enhancing the role, prestige, and visibility of public service.
- The day also marks the anniversary of the date when the International Labour Organization adopted the Convention on Labour Relations (Public Service), 1978 (No. 151).
- This Convention is a framework for determining the working conditions of all civil servants across the world.
International Widows’ Day
- International Widows Day is a United Nations ratified day of action to address the “poverty and injustice faced by millions of widows and their dependents in many countries”. The day takes place annually on 23 June.
- International Widows Day was established by The Loomba Foundation to raise awareness of the issue of widowhood.
- As per 2010 estimates, there are 245 million widows worldwide, 115 million of whom live in poverty and suffer from social stigmatization and economic deprivation purely because they have lost their husbands.
- UNGA Adopted It In 2010.
Olympic Day Run
- Olympic Day Run is an international Olympic Movement activity promoting mass participation in sports held in June organized by National Olympic Committees (NOCs).
- The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was formally established on 23 June 1894 through the efforts of Pierre de Coubertin promoting competitive sport as a revival of the ancient Olympic Games.
- The Olympic Day Run is usually held during June 17–24 by NOCs, with 1.5 km Olympic Day Fun Run, 5 km, and 10 km running activities.
14th BRICS Summit To Be Held Virtually
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the two-day 14th BRICS Summit hosted by China.
- The summit will be held in virtual format under the theme of Foster High-quality BRICS Partnership, Usher in a New Era for Global Development. Chinese President Xi Jinping will also chair a High-Level Dialogue on Global Development with guest countries on the 24th of June.
- BRICS leaders and leaders of relevant emerging markets and developing countries will attend the High-Level Dialogue on Global Development on 24th June. Ministry of External Affairs said BRICS has become a platform for discussing and deliberating on issues of common concern for all developing countries. BRICS countries have regularly called for reform of the multilateral system in order to make it more representative and inclusive.
- During the 14th BRICS Summit, deliberations are expected to be held in areas like terrorism, trade, health, traditional medicine, environment, Science & Technology, innovation, agriculture, technical and vocational education & training, and Micro Small, and Medium Enterprises. Discussions are also likely to be held on issues like reform of the multilateral system, combating the COVID-19 pandemic, and global economic recovery. Prior to the summit on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also deliver a keynote speech virtually in the opening ceremony of the BRICS Business Forum today.
Commonwealth Heads Of Government Meeting
- External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will be on a four-day visit to Kigali in Rwanda from today to attend the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
- He will be leading the Indian delegation to the CHOGM, which had earlier been postponed twice due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The theme of the summit is – Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming. During the meeting, the leaders of the Commonwealth Member States are scheduled to deliberate on issues of global challenges like climate change, food security, and health issues.
- The Commonwealth provides an important platform to deepen India’s engagement with Commonwealth members, in particular the Small States and Small Island Developing States. India is also one of the largest contributors to the Commonwealth and has assisted the organization with technical assistance and capacity building.
- During the visit, Dr. Jaishankar is expected to hold several bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Commonwealth member states and other visiting dignitaries. He will also interact with members of the Indian community at a reception to be hosted by the Indian High Commission in Kigali.
PM Modi On Three-day Visit To Germany And UAE
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a three-day visit to Germany and UAE beginning 26th of this month. Mr. Modi will visit Schloss Elmau, Germany for the G-7 Summit under the German Presidency on 26th and 27th of this month.
- During the Summit, he is expected to speak in two sessions that include Environment, Energy, Climate, Food Security, Health, Gender Equality and Democracy.
- To strengthen international collaboration on these important issues, other democracies such as Argentina, Indonesia, Senegal and South Africa have also been invited.
- On the sidelines of the summit, Mr. Modi will hold bilateral meetings with leaders of some of the participating countries. The invitation to the G7 Summit is in keeping with the tradition of strong and close partnership and high-level political contacts between India and Germany.
- After attending the G-7 Summit, Prime Minister Modi will be travelling to United Arab Emirates on 28th of this month to pay his personal condolences on the passing away of former UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He will also take the opportunity to congratulate Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on his election as the new President of UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. The Prime Minister will depart from UAE the same night.
Indian Communication Satellite To Be Launched By Arianespace
- The European space agency, Arianespace, will put into orbit two communication satellites belonging to India and Malaysia in the geostationary orbit. The two satellites cumulatively weighing over 10 thousand kilograms will be flown by Ariane-5 rocket from the spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.
- The Indian satellite, GSAT-24 has been developed by the New Space India Limited (NSIL), ISRO’s commercial arm, for television service provider Tata Sky. The GSAT-24 is a 24-Ku band communication satellite weighing over four thousand kilograms with Pan-India coverage for meeting DTH application needs. Moreover, the satellite has been configured to have a mission life of 15 years.
- In an official release, Arianespace CEO Stéphane Israël expressed his excitement about partnering again with ISRO since NSIL’s creation in 2019.
Ruchira Kamboj Appointed Permanent Representative Of India To The UN
- Senior Diplomat Ruchira Kamboj has been appointed as the next Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations.
- A 1987 batch of Indian Foreign Service officers, Ruchira Kamboj is presently serving as Ambassador of India to Bhutan.
- She will succeed TS Tirumurti as the Indian ambassador to the United Nation.
- Ministry of External Affairs said Ruchira Kamboj is expected to take up the assignment shortly.
