Rajnath Singh Releases 3rd Positive List of Defence Equipment Indigenisation

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday released the third positive indigenisation list of defence equipment, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.
  • According to the Ministry of Defence, the third list builds on the first list of 101 items and the second list of 108 items that were promulgated on August 21, 2020, and May 31, 2021, respectively.
  • The major items in the first list include 155mm/39 Cal Ultra-Light Howitzer, Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk-IA – Enhanced Indigenised Content, conventional submarines and communication satellites GSAT-7C.
  • The major items in the second list include the next-generation Corvette, Land-Based MRSAM Weapon System, Smart Anti-Field Weapon System (SAAW) Mk-I and Onboard Oxygen Generation System (OBOGS) based integrated life support system for fighter aircraft and 1000HP Engine for Tank (T-72).
  • The third list will consist of over 100 items, including complex equipment and systems which are being developed and likely to translate into firm orders over the next five years. INS Tarangini Departs For Lokayan-2022

  • INS Tarangini, the first Sail Training Ship of the Indian Navy, departed on Wednesday for Lokayan-2022 from Southern Naval Command (SNC) in Kochi, Kerala.
  • The highlight of this voyage will be hoisting the national flag in the heart of London on the occasion of 75th Independence Day as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. During the voyage, the ship will be visiting 17 ports across 14 countries.
  • INS Tarangini is a three-masted barque, commissioned in 1997 as a sail training ship for the Indian Navy. She is square rigged on the fore and main masts and fore-and-aft rigged on the mizzen mast. She was constructed in Goa to a design by the British naval architect Colin Mudie and launched on 1 December 1995. In 2003-04, she became the first Indian naval ship to circumnavigate the globe.

India Abstains in UNGA Vote To Suspend Russia from Human Rights Council

  • India and 57 other countries on Thursday abstained in the United Nations General Assembly on a vote with regard to the suspension of Russia from the Human Rights Council.
    • The resolution was adopted by the UNGA with 93 members voting in its favour and 24 countries against it.
    • The US-initiated resolution expressed “grave concern at the ongoing human rights and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, particularly at the reports of violations and abuses of human rights and violations of international humanitarian law by the Russian Federation, including gross and systematic violations and abuses of human rights”.
    • TS Tirumurti, India’s Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, said that since the inception of the Ukrainian conflict, India has stood for peace, dialogue, and diplomacy.
    • “We believe that no solution can be arrived at by shedding blood and at the cost of innocent lives. If India has chosen any side, it is the side of peace and it is for an immediate end to violence “.

‘Agnipath’ To Be New Entry Path for Youth to Join Indian Defence Forces as Agniveers

  • In a major reform that is expected to significantly reduce the age profile of the armed forces, the government is in the final stages of finalising the Agnipath recruitment entry scheme under which youth would be enlisted as soldiers for a period of three years.
  • During the three years of their service, the troops would be known as Agniveers (fire warriors) after which the defence forces would have the option of retaining some of them in service.
  • “Discussions are in the final stages on the Agnipath or the Tour of Duty entry scheme. The three forces have been giving presentations on the project-driven from the top”.
  • The issue started two years ago when the forces began discussions on the Tour of Duty scheme where soldiers would be inducted on a short-term contract, trained, and deployed in different fields.

India Appoints New Foreign Secretary

  • The government on Monday appointed Vinay Mohan Kwatra a career diplomat with 32 years of wide experience as India’s next Foreign Secretary succeeding incumbent Harsh Vardhan Shringla.
  • “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Vinay Mohan Kwatra (IFS: 1988), Ambassador in Kathmandu to the post of Foreign Secretary upon the superannuation of Harsh Vardhan Shringla (IFS: 1984) on 30.04.2022”.
  • A 1988 batch IFS officer, Kwatra is currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Nepal. According to the order issued by the government, Kwatra will be taking over the new charge upon the superannuation of Harsh Vardhan Shringla later this month.
