ICG Detains Iranian Boat
- The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) detained an Iranian fishing vessel, with six Indian crew, west of Bey pore off the coast of Kerala late on May 05, 2024. The swift sea-air coordinated operation involved the ships and aircraft of the ICG.
- After intercepting the boat, an ICG team boarded the vessel and thoroughly investigated it to check the involvement of any anti-national activity. Initial investigation revealed that the owner of the boat was an Iranian sponsor who had contracted these Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu and issued them Iranian Visas for fishing off the Iran coast.
- The crew alleged that the sponsor ill-treated and deprived them of basic living conditions, besides confiscating their passports. The crew said that they had decided to escape from Iran to India using the same boat.
- The detained vessel was safely brought to Kochi for further investigation on May 06, 2024.
China’s Third Aircraft Carrier’s Sea Trials
- China’s third aircraft carrier, Fujian, embarked on its maiden trials last week, marking a significant moment in China’s naval expansion efforts aimed at challenging the US’s global presence. Named after the Fujian province, the carrier is the largest and most advanced Chinese aircraft carrier ever built.
- Fujian carrier departed from Shanghai’s Jiangnan Shipyard, and the trials will primarily test the reliability and stability of the aircraft carrier’s propulsion and electrical systems, state news agency Xinhua reported.
- The trials will be conducted for almost two years before the carrier is inducted in another five years. The People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is the “largest navy” in the world, surpassing the US with over 370 battleships, the US Department of Defense said.
- India’s Third Aircraft Carrier
- Former Navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar said last year that the indigenous aircraft carrier-2 (IAC-2) would be a repeat order of INS Vikrant. “We are still working on what size IAC II should be and the capabilities that are desired.
- But, for now, we have put a hold on it because we have just commissioned INS Vikrant, and we are quite happy with the way the ship performed in the trials.”
- INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya are built on the STOBAR platform and house the MiG-29K fighter jets. The naval version of Rafale and Tejas are expected to replace the MiGs soon.
Russia Announces Nuclear Weapon Drills
- Russia plans to hold drills simulating the use of tactical nuclear weapons, the Defense Ministry announced Monday, days after the Kremlin reacted angrily to comments by senior Western officials about the war in Ukraine.
- The drills are in response to “provocative statements and threats of certain Western officials regarding the Russian Federation,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
- It was the first time that Russia has publicly announced drills involving tactical nuclear weapons, though its strategic nuclear forces regularly hold exercises. Tactical nuclear weapons have a lower yield compared to massive warheads that arm intercontinental ballistic missiles intended to obliterate entire cities.
Maiden Visit Of Jordan Armed Forces Training Delegation
- A three member Jordan Armed Forces (JAF) training delegation led by Cdr Hazem I Maitah visited Southern Naval Command, Kochi and Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala from 29 Apr to 04 May 24.
- The maiden visit was aimed at military training exchanges as decided during the second consultative meeting on defence cooperation between the two countries in Mar 23. The delegation visited various training facilities in the professional training schools of SNC, Kochi.
- Salient aspects included familiarisation with simulators, professional interactions and demonstration of VBSS & Diving Ops. A guided tour of the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and ship repair facilities at Cochin Shipyard Ltd was also conducted.
Israel Agrees To Allow Aid Into Gaza, Strikes Rafah
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told US President Joe Biden on Monday that he would ensure the Kerem Shalom crossing between Israel and Gaza is open for humanitarian aid, the White House said. Biden also reiterated his “clear position on Rafah” in a call with Netanyahu, the White House said in a statement.
- Also on Monday, Israel’s military carried out airstrikes in Rafah, residents said, hours after Israel told Palestinians to evacuate parts of the southern Gaza city where more than a million people uprooted by the war have been sheltering.
- Instructed by Arabic text messages, phone calls, and flyers to move to what the Israeli military called an “expanded humanitarian zone” around 20 km (12 miles) away, some Palestinian families began trundling away under chilly spring rain.
